The Cult of Asherah in Ancient Israel and Judah
Recent archaeological discoveries have encouraged scholars to reinvestigate the Israelite religion. In this book, Judith Hadley uses these discoveries, alongside biblical material and non-biblical inscriptions, to examine the evidence for the worship of Asherah as the partner of God in the Bible. By investigating the Khirbet al-Qom and Kuntillet 'Ajrud inscriptions, for example, where the phrase 'Yahweh and his Asherah' is frequently in evidence, the author asks what the ancient Israelites meant by this, how they construed the relationship between Yahweh and Asherah, and whether in fact the term actually referred to an object of worship rather than to a goddess. The author also evaluates more recent scholarship to substantiate her conclusions. This is a detailed and brilliant study which promises to make a significant contribution to the ongoing debate about the exact nature of Asherah and her significance in pre-exilic Israel and Judah.
The Future of Biblical Archaeology
In recent times Biblical archaeology has been heavily criticised by some camp who maintain that it has little to offer Near Eastern archaeology. Reframing Her
How does one read the story of Sarah and Hagar, or Jezebel and Rahab today, if one is a woman reader situated in a postcolonial society? This is the question undergirding this work, which considers a selection of biblical texts in which women have significant roles. Employing both a gender and a postcolonial lens, it asks sharp questions both of the interests embedded in the texts themselves and of their impact upon contemporary women readers. Whereas most postcolonial studies have been undertaken from the perspective of the colonized this work reads the texts from the position of a settler descendant, and is an attempt to engage with the disquietening and challenging questions that reading from such a location raises. Letters from early settler women in New Zealand, contemporary fiction, and personal reminiscence become tools for the task, complementing those traditionally employed in critical biblical readings.

Late Antique Images of the Virgin Annunciate Spinning
In Late Antique Images of the Virgin Annunciate Spinning: allotting the scarlet and the purple, Catherine Gines Taylor traces the way early Christians assimilated the symbolism of spinning into images of the Annunciation. Taylor offers an art historical and interdisciplinary look at the earliest images of Mary spinning, underscoring the iconographic model of idealized matronage consistent with lay piety and the cult of Mary. The personal and domestic nature of this motif is evidence toward popular Mariological devotion that preceded the exclusive, semi-divine presentation of the Theotokos, and stands in contrast with traditional ascetic models for Mary.
A Feminist Companion to Reading the Bible
This valuable resource both presents and demonstrates the numerous developments in feminist criticsm of the Bible and the enormous rage of influence that feminist criticism has come to have in biblical studies. The purpose of the book is to raise issues of method that are largely glossed over or merely implied in most non-feminist works on the Bible. The editors have included broadly theoretical essays on feminist methods and the various roles they may play in research and pedagogy, as well as non-feminist essays that have direct bearing on the methods or subject matter that feminists use, as well as reading that illustrate the variety of methodological strategies adopted by feminist scholars. Some 30 scholars, from North America and Europe, have contributed to this Companion.
On Reading Prophetic Texts
The articles in this volume have been written in memory of the feminist biblical scholar, Fokkelien van Dijk-Hemmes, who died at the early age of 50. The authors endeavour to continue and advance the dialogue with her by evaluating and interacting with her scholarly legacy. Their concern is with various aspects of her work on the Hebrew Bible, and they respond in particular to the feminist hermeneutics she developed for reading biblical texts. Several articles test her method in application to specific prophetic texts. Other contributions focus on aspects of the role of women in the cults of Ancient Israel. A third group of essays confronts Fokkelien van Dijk-Hemmes' approach with more traditional ways of biblical interpretation. This book is an important contribution to the ongoing debate on feminist insights into aspects of the literature, culture and religion of Ancient Israel.
Proverbs
2019 Association of Catholic Publishers Book of the Year In this volume, Alice Ogden Bellis considers the book of Proverbs as a structural whole, the sages having designed it in such a way as to make positive statements about women and to undercut the negative ones. By grouping Proverbs together around common issues, the reader is called to consider the perennial moral questions of wealth and poverty, diligence and laziness, and integrity and corruption, as well as the relationship among these values. The result is much more complex and has greater depth than the random list of bromides that most of Proverbs is often thought to be. This volume opens up a multi-dimensional spiritual puzzle.

This work assembles contributions from North America's leading Hebrew Bible/Old Testament scholars in honor of a highly respected biblical scholar, whose work on biblical prophets has been especially influential. Within the list are former teachers, current colleagues, and former students who are now colleagues in their own right, representing a wide range of denominational traditions represented-Roman Catholics, Lutheran, Episcopal, Presbyterian, etc. The book is divided into major two sections with a brief introduction by the editors, John Ahn and the Stephen Cook. Here, a brief biography and the academic career of Robert Wilson's contribution to the guild (with a bibliography at the end of this section) and more over, at a personal level, his ceaseless work in helping to transform and reform the "new" Yale Divinity School and his impact in molding the Ph.D. program in HB/OT in the Religious Studies Department of the Graduate School at Yale University. Part I hold the essays on the Former Prophets and Part II on the Latter Prophets.
