En 1996, cuando se cumplían 65 años de la proclamación de la Segunda República Española (1931) y 60 del inicio de la Guerra Civil (1936), presenté en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona, de la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, mi tesis doctoral "Arquitectos españoles exiliados en México. Su labor en la España republicana (1931-1939) y su integración en México", dirigida por Josep Maria Montaner y aprobada cum laude por un jurado presidido por Oriol Bohigas. El trabajo obtuvo el Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado en Arquitectura, curso 1995-96. Hoy, cuando se cumple el 75 aniversario del final de aquella guerra y del inicio de la diáspora republicana (1939), se convierte en el libro que tiene el lector en sus manos. A sugerencia de varios colegas que la conocían, acepté publicarla admitiendo la opinión de que tiene plena vigencia como aportación a la historia de la arquitectura del siglo XX en ambos países, y que podrá servir como base a trabajos posteriores que aborden temáticas similares.
In het omvangrijke oeuvre van Herman Hertzberger is de bouw van scholen een van de belangrijkste opgaven. Hij bouwde tot op heden ruim dertig scholen.
