Why are some regional development strategies adopted and others rejected? Only limited systematic attention has been paid to the politics of regional policy, including the role of institutions, discourse, and political debate in shaping this major area of public policy. The book develops an institutionalist approach to the study of regional policy, capable of spanning major European development paradigms and accounting for the dynamic relationship between organisations, policies and political discourse. This conceptual framework is then applied to the Scottish Development Agency, a development body famed across Europe for its innovative policies but surrounded by political controversy in Scotland. A detailed study of corporate strategies, policy implementation, and the wider British environment questions existing interpretations of the organisation which tend to vilify anti-interventionist Thatcherites or glorify shrewd development professionals. Instead the author proposes an alternative synthesis which highlights the interplay between institutions, discourse and regional development in the politics of regional policy.

University-Industry Research Interactions is a compilation of papers focused on the examination of the mechanisms for cooperation between universities and industries. A section of the book covers the interfaces between industrial needs and university activities. The book provides some useful guides to increasing the effectiveness of using technical resources. The book discusses the use of university-industry interactions as a mechanism to increase the effectiveness of utilizing science and engineering. The articles contained in the book come from an international conference attended by some industrialized countries. The recommendations made in the book are intended to optimize the benefits from the use of technical resources. Another topic covered in the book is the means to enhance the collaboration between industries and universities. These collaborations are intended to be mutually beneficial between the two sectors. The text will be a useful tool for educators and economists.
Higher education is a complex package of issues which never seems to leave the limelight. The primary wedge issues are tuition cost, access, accountability, financial aid, government funding, sports and their place within higher education, academic results, societal gains as a whole in terms of international competition, and continuing education. This new book examines current issues with special attention to the Higher Education Act and its reauthorisation and the aspects of higher education related to it.
"From the Model T to the SUV, Autophobia reveals that our vexed relationship with the automobile is nothing new - in fact, debates over whether cars are forces of good or evil in our world have raged for over a century now, ever since the automobile was invented."--Jacket.

* What are the critical factors for entrepreneurial success? * What is required to create an environment supportive to entrepreneurial activity? * What are the critical factors for developing a venture capital industry? In the Spring of 1989, researchers from throughout Europe were invited to submit research proposals for sponsorship by EFER under the above three broad headings. EFER (the European Foundation for Entrepreneurship Research) was set up in 1987 to foster research into entrepreneurship in Europe, to facilitate discussion between policy-makers, practitioners and academics, and to disseminate the results. Nine projects, which form the foundation of this book, were chosen from eight countries. The resultant papers were presented at the second annual Forum held in INSEAD, France, in December 1989. Discussion of each paper was initiated by a practitioner. Their comments plus the subsequent debate were recorded and are presented after each paper.
