On February 9, 1861, the state of Mississippi elected the confederacy's first president, Jefferson Davis. In Vicksburg, Mississippi, state, and city officials enacted Jim Crow laws in 1884. These statutes legalized racial segregation. Racism spread from generation to generation, even after the Civil Rights Movement. This continued in the millennium years by White and Black people who were at odds with each other. CARLTON WASTSON, who worked for Maryland Paper Company up North received a promotion. Carlton had to oversee one of Maryland paper plants in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He knew it was a career opportunity but was skeptical of his children living in the South. The paper plant was located near Delta, Mississippi, better known as “The Delta,” his hometown. The one he ran away from as a teenager, due to the tragedy his eyes witnessed.
