About 20 years ago the emphasis in soil chemistry research switched from studies of problems related to scarcities of plant nutrients to those arising from soil pollutants. The new problems have come about because of the excessive uses of fertilizers, the inputs from farm and industrial wastes, the widespread applications of anthropogenie xenobiotic chemicals, and the deterioration of soil structure resulting from certain modern agriculture practises. A NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) was conducted on June 21-23, 1994 in Visegnid, Hungary related to the clean-up of former Soviet military installation sites. This ARW included a technical site visit to the Komarom Base Site which is a former Soviet military installation in Hungary. During this three-day ARW, a strategy and set of recommendations were developed for selecting technologies and evaluating remediation as the economic and approaches for these sites. Provides information on fertilizer use, consumption patterns, composition & regulations. This information is for fertilizers from natural mineral sources & those that are derived from industrial byproducts. The data for heavy metals in fertilizers are used to provide estimates of the rates at which these metals may be added to agricultural soils from standard agronomic practices. The additions of heavy metals to agricultural soil are discussed in terms of federal & international regulations. This report focuses on inorganic fertilizers & their application to agricultural lands.
