55th Anniversary of the German Society for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care
This book presents to all those who are interested in the history of Anaesthesiology historical details and information on the development of anaesthesiology in Germany and the remarkable growth of our Society. At the founding session of the German Society of Anaesthesia in Munich on 10 April 1953 42 persons had signed the founding documents. Today about 12,000 anaesthetists are members of the German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, making the DGAI the biggest national society within ESA. Well known are the pioneering contributions of German scientists and surgeons to the development of general, regional and local anaesthesia during the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. But less known outside Germany are the reasons for the delayed evolution of anaesthesiology as a specialty of its own in German medicine, far later than in the UK, Scandinavia or the USA. Giant Resonances
Giant resonances are collective excitations of the atomic nucleus, a typical quantum many-body system. The study of these fundamental modes has in many respects contributed to our understanding of the bulk behavior of the nucleus and of the dynamics of non-equilibrium excitations. Although the phenomenon of giant resonances has been known for more than 50 years, a large amount of information has been obtained in the last 10 years. This book gives an up-to-date, comprehensive account of our present knowledge of giant resonances. It presents the experimental facts and the techniques used to obtain that information, describes how these facts fit into theoretical concepts and how this allows to determine various nuclear properties which are otherwise difficult to obtain. Included as an introduction is an overview of the main facts, a short history of how the field has developed in the course of time, and a discussion of future perspectives.
Immunobiology of Bone Marrow Transplantation
Bone marrow transplantation, the goal which integrates hemato logists, immunologists, geneticists, oncologists and specialists of several other fields, has overcome its state of stagnation in recent years. Clinically as well as experimentally new approaches to old problems and new conclusions from recent findings proliferate: bone marrow transplantation in leukemic remission, bone marrow growth in cell culture, bone marrow manipulation with antisera, bone marrow differentiation in histoincompatible hosts, immuno suppression with partial body irradiation to cite just a few. These and other new developments were discussed by experts from 12 countries in and outside the European Community during an international seminar held on March 8-10, 1979 by the "Institut fur Hamatologie, GSF", under the auspices of the European Communities. The editors thank both the contributors to this symposium, who made it a successful meeting and submitted their manuscripts punctually, and the publishers, who have provided a volume of high quality in good time.
