Hitler′s Prisons - Legal Terror in Nazi Germany
State prisons played an indispensable part in the terror of the Third Reich, incarcerating many hundreds of thousands of men and women during the Nazi era. This important book illuminates the previously unknown world of Nazi prisons, their victims, and the judicial and penal officials who built and operated this system of brutal legal terror. Nikolaus Wachsmann describes the operation and function of legal terror in the Third Reich and brings Nazi prisons to life through the harrowing stories of individual inmates. Drawing on a vast array of archival materials, he traces the series of changes in prison policies and practice that led eventually to racial terror, brutal violence, slave labor, starvation, and mass killings. Wachsmann demonstrates that "ordinary" legal officials were ready collaborators who helped to turn courts and prisons into key components in the Nazi web of terror. And he concludes with a discussion of the whitewash of the Nazi legal system in postwar West Germany.
Crime and Criminal Justice in Modern Germany
The history of criminal justice in modern Germany has become a vibrant field of research, as demonstrated in this volume. Ausgehend von der These, Argentos Filme seien Meditationen über das Zuschauen und das "Filme Sehen", untersucht der vorliegende Band unterschiedliche Blicktypen mit der Intention aufzuzeigen, dass eine Diskussion über Argentos Kino auch immer eine Diskussion über das Kino allgemein sein muss.
Strafvollzugspolitik und Haftregime in der SBZ und in der DDR
Wurde von der DDR-Forschung vor allem der Untersuchungshaftvollzug des MfS thematisiert, so blieb der »normale« Strafvollzug bislang vernachlässigt, insbesondere die Zeit der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone. Daher werden nun der Strafvollzug der SBZ unter Justizverwaltung und das Haftregime in den Gefängnissen des Innenministeriums der DDR ausführlich analysiert. Im Mittelpunkt steht der Strafvollzug in Sachsen bzw. den drei sächsischen Bezirken in der Ära Ulbricht. Es wird gezeigt, wie sich das Haftsystem seit Kriegsende entwickelte und veränderte. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die Justizverwaltung trotz desolater allgemeiner Haftbedingungen um einen menschenwürdigen Umgang mit den Häftlingen bemüht war.
