ASEAN Trade Policy Options
International trade is the life-blood of the countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Faced with several global trade issues the ASEAN countries individually and collectively pursue a multilateral approach by actively participating in the current Uruguay Round of GATT. The seven studies in this volume assess the strengths and weaknesses of international trading.
ASEAN-South Asia Trade
For the purpose of this study, countries in ASEAN and South Asia are categorized as one region. The analysis in most instances will concentrate on major commodities such as cocoa, coconut oil, coffee, cotton, jute, palm oil, rice, natural rubber, tea and timber. This does not, however, preclude the application of many of the generalizations given here to the minor commodities whose export earnngs from these export earnings are generally less than those of the other commodities such as sugar, tapioca, pepper, coconut, maize, fruits and vegetables, etc. Further, this study will not cover fuels, minerals and metals, animal products and fishery products as their trading patterns may differ from agricultural commodities based on trees and plants. Moreover, steps which individual countries could initiate independently for the development of their primary commodity trade have been left out as they comprise a separate area of study.

Theatres of Accumulation
In the great cities of Latin America and Asia, international business and local firms meet and, in particular, influence teh development strategies of Third World countries. Regional Science in Developing Countries
Developing countries are suffering from the multiple and overlapping problems of poverty, malnutrition, excessive population growth and also the increased environmental pollution due to rapid industrialization and urbanization, particularly in the existing urban centres. The migration from rural areas of agricultural population to urban areas is making this situation more problematic. The lack of established institutions leads to the failure of public policy no matter how efficiently it is formulated. The book discusses the major regional developmental problems in poor countries, covering economic, social and environmental problems. It deals with case-studies for a set of individual countries, and discusses their unique problems, investigating how the established methods of regional science can be used to solve some of these problems.
ASEAN-China Economic Relations in the Context of Pacific Economic Development and Co-operation
Volume I of the series on ASEAN-China Relations focused on trends and patterns in bilateral economic relations between ASEAN countries on the one hand, and China on the other. Volume II focused on macroeconomic and institutional developments in China and in selected sectors in ASEAN and China, and their implications for bilateral economic relations. Essential Outsiders
Ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia, like Jews in Central Europe until the Holocaust, have been remarkably successful as an entrepreneurial and professional minority. Whole regimes have sometimes relied on the financial underpinnings of Chinese business to maintain themselves in power, and recently Chinese businesses have led the drive to economic modernization in Southeast Asia. But at the same time, they remain, as the Jews were, the quintessential “outsiders.” In some Southeast Asian countries they are targets of majority nationalist prejudices and suffer from discrimination, even when they are formally integrated into the nation. The essays in this book explore the reasons why the Jews in Central Europe and the Chinese in Southeast Asia have been both successful and stigmatized.
