Arts - Therapies - Communication European Arts Therapy

Stipulation of a present actual position of Art Therapy, however, inevitably leads to further thoughts about ongoing development. Everything required for the theoretical-practical founding of a European Art Therapy, as discipline still has to be done, including construction of a communicative bridge to partners in other continents or countries. This development work has two strands of development. One follows a more theoretical direction with European Art Therapy as a research and teaching subject as an objective in view. The other is directed more towards practical fieldwork, which, in turn, can lead to the establishment of funds of experience as well as quantitative and qualitative investigations and thus to theoretical-methodical statements. In the contributions on hand both connections pervade. Naturally the individual articles in this collection do not fully expound the volume of art therapeutic work throughout Europe but they are a source of information and inspiration for the user from theory and / or practice, who can then find his particular niche with his own specific interests within the cross-section and subsequently continue the discourse spatially and objectively.

Despite their increasing popularity and reported effectiveness, there is a dearth of evidence-based research on the practices that fall under the umbrella of "the arts therapies". The successful treatment of a variety of psychiatric illnesses through the application of the arts therapies has long been recognized in many countries around the world, including psychosis, schizophrenia, depression and borderline symptoms. Providing valuable data on the effectiveness of the arts therapies, Arts Therapies and New Challenges in Psychiatry fills an important gap in the literature on psychiatric illnesses. Object relations, which emphasizes the importance of the preoedipal period and the infant-mother relationship, is considered by many analysts to be the major development in psychoanalytic theory since Freud. In this reinterpretation of its history Peter L. Rudnytsky focuses on two pivotal figures: Otto Rank, one of Freud's original and most brilliant disciples, who later broke away from psychoanalysis, and D. W. Winnicott, the leading representative of the Independent tradition in British psychoanalysis. Rudnytsky begins with an overview arguing that object relations theory can synthesize the scientific and hermeneutic dimensions of psychoanalysis. He the uses the ideas of Rank and Winnicott...

The Kramer Method of Art Therapy

Although this is a clinical text, it is also more a conversation than a book. It is a means of sharing the work of artists, most of whom have varying degrees of special needs. It emphasizes that handicapping conditions do not constitute a barrier for creating therapeutically meaningful art. The precepts of Edith Kramer focus on subtly suggesting media, content, or techniques, all without interfering with the artist’s preferences. This intervention came to be known as the ‘Third Hand’ where the artist in therapy is free to accept, reject or ignore the therapist’s suggestions. The case vignettes describe how aesthetic richness is also illustrative of the uniqueness of clients’ clinic...

Kunsttherapeutische Stichworte
