Germans as Minorities during the First World War
Offering a global comparative perspective on the relationship between German minorities and the majority populations amongst which they found themselves during the First World War, this collection addresses how ’public opinion’ (the press, parliament and ordinary citizens) reacted towards Germans in their midst. The volume uses the experience of Germans to explore whether the War can be regarded as a turning point in the mistreatment of minorities, one that would lead to worse manifestations of racism, nationalism and xenophobia later in the twentieth century.
Constructing a German Diaspora
This book takes on a global perspective to unravel the complex relationship between Imperial Germany and its diaspora. Around 1900, German-speakers living abroad were tied into global power-political aspirations. Bally - A History of Footwear in the Interwar Period
Carl Franz Bally founded a shoe factory in Switzerland in 1851. Within decades, the Bally name had achieved worldwide recognition for its high-quality footwear. The history of modern footwear can be traced through the lens of Bally's corporate evolution. This book brings together the results of research on such topics as the economic importance of fashion, Bally's fortunes in the US, the career of shoe design, the sourcing and use of materials, and the rise of strategic product display. The research focuses on the 1930s and 1940s: years of economic crisis and war, characterized by a wide diversity of designs and increasing variety in product range. Shortages also led to experiments with materials and technical innovations. Featuring numerous points of contact with adjacent fields of historical study, this publication marks a contribution to the history of fashion as the history of industrially manufactured products.

The Germans in India
Based on years of research in libraries and archives in England, Germany, India and Switzerland, this book offers a new interpretation of global migration from the early nineteenth until the early twentieth century. Rather than focusing upon the mass transatlantic migration or the movement of Britons towards British colonies, it examines the elite German migrants who progressed to India, especially missionaries, scholars and scientists, businessmen and travellers. The story told here questions, for the first time, the concept of Europeans in India. Previous scholarship has ignored any national variations in the presence of white people in India, viewing them either as part of a ruling elite or, more recently, white subalterns. The German elites undermine these conceptions. They developed into distinct groups before 1914, especially in the missionary compound, but faced marginalisation and expulsion during the First World War.

»Wir tanzten und tanzten zu jeder Zeit«
Ästhetische, politische, ethnische und Gender-Aspekte des Tanzes in Vicki Baums Erzählwerk, journalistischen Arbeiten und Reiseberichten Die Schriftstellerin Vicki Baum symbolisierte den Typus der "Neuen Frau" in der Weimarer Republik, zu deren emanzipiertem, selbst- und körperbewusstem Lebensstil nicht zuletzt der Tanz gehörte. Ihre Erzähltexte, journalistischen Arbeiten und Reiseberichte reflektieren den Tanz in seinen ästhetischen, sozialen, politischen, ethnischen und Gender-Aspekten. Neben tanzhistorischen und -theoretischen Kontexten und Einzelinterpretationen einst vielgelesener Romane bzw. literarischer Tanzkunstwerke wie "Menschen im Hotel", "Die Tänze der Ina Raffay", "Marion", "Die goldenen Schuhe" und "Liebe und Tod auf Bali" berücksichtigt die Untersuchung erstmals auch weitgehend unbekannte Texte von und über Vicki Baum in Archivbeständen. Angestrebt wird damit auch die Neubewertung einer Schriftstellerin, die sich selbst als »erstklassige Autorin zweiter Güte« bezeichnet hat.
Lebenschancen vor Ort
Familienpolitik gewinnt heute nach einem jahrzehntelangen Schattendasein wieder zunehmend an Aufmerksamkeit – sowohl in den gesellschaftspolitischen Diskursen der Öffentlichkeit als auch auf der politischen Agenda. In der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung lässt sich eine starke Fokussierung auf die Bundespolitik feststellen. Dabei sind es gerade die Kommunen, die nah an den Problemen der Familien sind und in denen unmittelbarer Handlungsdruck entsteht. Vor Ort wird die Lebenssituation der Familien geprägt und hier entscheiden sich Lebenswege und Lebenschancen ihrer Mitglieder. Die Beiträge des Bandes nehmen diese Ebene in den Blick und machen deutlich, dass eine wirkungsorientierte Familienpolitik ohne die Berücksichtigung der kommunalen Ebene zu kurz greift.
