Instead of getting bogged down in negative cycles, the book will help readers leave those behavior struggles behind and turn children on to cooperation and respect. the most difficult things for a parent to learn. This clear and concise guide by the chairman of the Department of Child Studies and Special Education at Old Dominion University explains what works--and what doesn't--to encourage a child's best behavior.
Abstract: A 10-step program provides guidance to parents for instilling confidence and independence in their children so that they relate to others in a healthy, mature, and caring way. Each of the 10 steps of the program is illustrated with case studies of children of all ages, and with questions and sensible solutions for parents. These steps cover practices and recommendations for: treating the child with respect (a practice deemed most crucial); training the child to earn privileges; stopping dangerous, destructive, or self-defeating behavior; rewarding proper behavior; letting the child solve his own problems; enlisting the child's help in making rules; encouraging individuality; showing the child that feelings are important; developing the appreciation of the child for parents as role models; and enjoying the company of the child. Each step is accompanied by a list of training and behavior suggestions for the week. (wz).
