William Shields (1728-1797), of Scottish lineage, immigrated from Ireland to New Castle, Delaware, and settled in Frederick County, Maryland, where he married Jane Bentley Williams in 1754. Henry Shields (b.1759), his son, married Hester Waddell and moved to eastern Tennessee in the late 1700s, where he died before April 1835. Descendants listed lived chiefly in Tennessee.
The congregation of Meadow Creek enjoys dinner on the grounds in the shade of a massive red oak tree. Many of the people seated around the tables are descendants of Revolutionary War veterans and have lived on the south side of the Nolichucky River all their lives. Most of them are farmers. They love this place. Theyre very good at what they do. And they treasure their church. For two hundred years, the congregation has met here, and it hasnt always been easy. The Christian life never is.
