Carolina Planters on the Alabama Frontier

Carolina Planters on the Alabama Frontier: The Spencer-Robeson-McKenzie Family collects the papers of Elihu Spencer, a fourth-generation New Englander, and his family and Southern descendants, to form a history of the American nation from the point of view of planters and those they held in slavery. The documents in this volume are accounts of a privileged world that was afflicted by constant loss and despair. The families lived as isolated, landed gentry in a society where medical treatment had hardly evolved since the Middle Ages. The papers together form a dramatic narrative of early Americans from the mid-eighteenth century to the harsh years after the Civil War. They created their new society with courage and imagination and tenacity, while never recognizing their own moral blind spot regarding the holding of human beings in slavery. It brought about the collapse of their world--poignantly expressed in these letters.

American humorist D.B. Tarpley is at it again with this collection of angry essays, furious poems, and rage-inducing anecdotes. Essentially the coffee-table book from Hell, 'The Compendium Veribellum' will grab your brain like a sopping wet sponge and ruthlessly twist until everything you know has been squeezed out onto the cold, hard ground. But in a good way. "The height of cultural discourse encapsulated in a porcelain sized tea-cup of gentlemanly grace and honorable humility." - Genghis Khan "This dude needs to lighten up." - Vlad 'The Impaler' Tepes "Screw D.B. Tarpley. Screw him right in the armpit." - Fred Rogers

Within current political, social, and ethical debates – both in academia and society – activism and how individuals should approach issues facing nonhuman animals, have become increasingly important, ‘hot’ issues. Individuals, groups, advocacy agencies, and governments have all espoused competing ideas for how we should approach nonhuman use and exploitation. Ought we proceed through liberation? Abolition? Segregation? Integration? As nonhuman liberation, welfare, and rights’ groups increasingly interconnect and identify with other ‘social justice movements’, resolutions to these questions have become increasingly entangled with questions of what justice and our ethical commitm...

As the walls around crumble, she soon realizes too late of the ones who are most important while trapped in the hands of another.

While the history of philosophy has traditionally given scant attention to food and the ethics of eating, in the last few decades the subject of food ethics has emerged as a major topic, encompassing a wide array of issues, including labor justice, public health, social inequity, animal rights and environmental ethics. This handbook provides a much needed philosophical analysis of the ethical implications of the need to eat and the role that food plays in social, cultural and political life. Unlike other books on the topic, this text integrates traditional approaches to the subject with cutting edge research in order to set a new agenda for philosophical discussions of food ethics. The Routl...
