Women, Faith, and Family takes an insider look at the practices adopted by the Women's Islamic Coalition, an assembly of Iranian women who embrace their faith as a principal component of their pursuit of gender justice. By using the Coalition's activism as a lens through which to view women's legal status, Samaneh Oladi examines complex questions about the extent of female agency, showing how Muslim women's access to religious resources and use of hermeneutics strengthens their position in gender negotiations. Female religious activists not only struggle against gender hierarchy and conventional paradigms but also cultivate a unique women's jurisprudence that challenges both Western liberalism and religious orthodoxy. Oladi provides a nuanced portrait of Iranian women's activism and their attempts to reform their legal status, challenging deep-rooted assumptions in secular feminism that there is an intrinsic discord between women's agency and their religion.

Al-Azhar University is widely regarded as the most prestigious educational institution in Sunni Islam. In this capacity, it plays an important role in Egyptian society, also touching on the relationship between Muslims and Christians. The present study examines the writings of three contemporary Al-Azhar scholars in an effort to identify the operative understanding of comparative religions (namely Islam and Christianity) in each case. In this monograph Philipp Bruckmayr examines the development of Cambodia’s Muslim minority from the mid-19th to the 21st century. During this period Cambodia’s Cham and Chvea Muslims established strong relationships with Malay centers of Islamic learning in Patani, Kelantan and Mecca. During the 1970s to the early 1990s these longstanding relationships came to a sudden halt due to civil war and the systematic Khmer Rouge repression. Since the 1990s ties to the Malay world have been revived and new Islamic currents, including Salafism and Tablighism, have left their mark on contemporary Cambodian Islam. Bruckmayr traces how these dynamics resulted inter alia in a history of local Islamic factionalism, culminating in the eventual state recognition of two separate Islamic congregations in the late 1990s.
