"Large outdoor fires are increasingly frequent, as climate and weather patterns change. The exceptionally high costs of recent forest and wildland-urban interface fires have drawn international attention. This systematic overview sets out useful engineering equations and computational models for analysing large outdoor fire dynamics, and presents practical approaches to risk assessment. It details the broad range of items needed for analysing risks and for designing plans to improve resilience in the built environment. This book shows professional engineers and researchers how to use or develop analytical tools, and also serves graduate courses"--

Large Outdoor Fire Dynamics provides the essential knowledge for the hazard evaluation of large outdoor fires, including wildland, WUI (wildland-urban interface), and urban fires. The spread of outdoor fires can be viewed as a successive occurrence of physical and chemical processes – solid fuel combustion, heat transfer to surrounding combustibles, and ignition of heated combustibles – which are explained herein. Engineering equations frequently used in practical hazard analyses are derived and then integrated to implement a computational code predicting fire spread among discretely distributed combustibles. This code facilitates learning the procedure of hazard evaluation for large out...

This book focuses on topics in the entire spectrum of fire safety science, targeting research in fires, explosions, combustion science, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, risk analysis, structural engineering, and other subjects. The book contributes to a gain in advanced scientific knowledge and presents or advances new ideas in all topics in fire safety science. Two decades ago, the 1st Asia-Oceania Symposium on Fire Science and Technology was held in Hefei, China. Since then, the Asia-Oceania Symposia have grown in size and quality. This book, reflecting that growth, helps readers to understand fire safety technology, design, and methodology in diverse areas including historical buildings, photovoltaic panels, batteries, and electric vehicles.

The Proceedings of 11th Asia-Oceania Symposium on Fire Science and Technology

This book features selected papers from the 11th Asia-Oceania Symposium on Fire Science and Technology (AOSFST 2018), held in Taipei, Taiwan. Covering the entire spectrum of fire safety science, it focuses on research on fires, explosions, combustion science, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, risk analysis and structural engineering, as well as other topics. Presenting advanced scientific insights, the book introduces and advances new ideas in all areas of fire safety science. As such it is a valuable resource for academic researchers, fire safety engineers, and regulators of fire, construction and safety authorities. Further it provides new ideas for more efficient fire protection.

The focus of this volume is comprised of the fundamentals, models, and information technologies (IT) methods and tools for disaster prediction and mitigation. A more detailed list of topics includes mathematical and computational modeling of processes leading to or producing disasters, modeling of disaster effects, IT means for disaster mitigation, including data mining tools, knowledge-based and expert systems for use in disaster circumstances, GIS-based systems for disaster prevention and mitigation and equipment for disaster-prone areas. A specific type or class of disasters (natural or human-made), however will not be part of the main focus of this work. Instead, this book was conceived to offer a comprehensive, integrative view on disasters, seeking to determine what various disasters have in common. Because disaster resilience and mitigation involve humans, societies and cultures, not only technologies and economic models, special attention was paid in this volume to gain a comprehensive view on these issues, as a foundation of the IT tool design.

An international workshop was held within the FireResearch Division at NIST's Engineering Laboratory on June 27th, 2011. The workshop was entitled "Urban and Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Fires: A Workshop to Explore Future Japan/USA Research Collaborations." The workshop was organized by Dr. Samuel L. Manzello (EL-NIST/USA)and Dr. Keisuke Himoto (Kyoto University/JAPAN). The goal of this workshop was to open a dialogue to embark on new research collaborations between both countries in an effort to develop scientifically based building codes/standards that will be of use to both countries to reduce the devastation caused by urban and WUI fire spread.
