Following cessation of activities in 2002, Michael Votta, Jr., the Journal's most recent editor, assembled representative articles on composers and their works, historical research and composition analysis investigations, and produced this fine collection of writings. As a source of well-constructed research by some of the country's leading musicians, it fills a much needed place in everyone's library.
A History of the Music for Wind Band
The book provides a historical survey of the wind band’s music and denotes how historical and cultural developments have influenced it over the course of time. Although the modern wind band developed first in the 19th century, it has its roots in the wind music of ancient times, and music survives that has been composed since the Middle Ages. Therefore, this book covers the music from that time to the present, including the dance music of the Renaissance, the Harmoniemusik of the Classical Period, and the nationalistic music of the Romantic Period, as well as the major wind band repertoire developed after 1900.

The Reader's Guide to Music is designed to provide a useful single-volume guide to the ever-increasing number of English language book-length studies in music. Each entry consists of a bibliography of some 3-20 titles and an essay in which these titles are evaluated, by an expert in the field, in light of the history of writing and scholarship on the given topic.
