International interest focuses on why pupils from East-Asia tend to outperform pupils from the West and scholars have proposed a number of possible explanations to account for these international trends. Using Vygotsky's theory (1978) as a conceptual framework to "construct" school achievement, this book puts forward culturally relevant context for understanding developmental aspects of children’s school achievement and their implication to classroom practice and education progress. Converging the two important lines of inquiry – the child factor and the sociocultural factor – this book showcases evidence-based scholarly works from across the globe that shed light on causes of academic...
Cheung, Liu, Moratto, and their contributors examine how corpora can be effectively harnessed to benefit interpreting practice and research in East Asian settings. In comparison to the achievements made in the field of corpus- based translation studies, the use of corpora in interpreting is not comparable in terms of scope, methods, and agenda. One of the predicaments that hampers this line of inquiry is the lack of systematic corpora to document spoken language. This issue is even more pronounced when dealing with East Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, which are typologically different from European languages. As language plays a pivotal role in interpreting research, the use of corpora in interpreting within East Asian contexts has its own distinct characteristics as well as methodological constraints and concerns. However, it also generates new insights and findings that can significantly advance this research field. A valuable resource for scholars of scholars focusing on corpus interpreting, particularly those dealing with East Asian languages.
Nonlinear optics is one of the most important fields of science and engineering, covering the generation, transmission, and control of the whole spectrum of laser pulses in solids, liquids, gases, and fibers. In turn, one of the most important ultrafast nonlinear optical processes is the supercontinuum generation - the production of intense ultrafast broadband "white light" pulses. This book is intended to fill the need of both scientists and graduate students for a single source book containing the most necessary and relevant material on supercontinuum technology. It reviews the basic principles, surveys research results, and presents the current thinking of experts in the supercontinuum field.
This volume highlights key aspects of new media, knowledge practices and multiliteracies in communication and education, providing readers with a range of empirical findings, novel theories and applications. The reports also include best practices, case studies, innovative solutions and lessons learned with regard to three core fields: (1) New media: discussions on the effects of traditional and new media, legal risks concerning social media, the effects of media intervention on help-seeking attitudes, obstacles of using tablets for learning, qualitative interpretation of media reporting, use of social media for enhancing design practices, and news-reading habits; (2) Knowledge practices: ex...
"While changes related to cultural diversity are visible and at work in social, cultural and political contexts, cultural diversity as such is being ignored or rejected across many countries. It is the denial or hidden nature of diversity in educational settings and learning processes, reflected in the marginalisation of this topic, that this book wants to address. The book chapters are blind peer reviewed and draw from a variety of learning settings across the world. They are intended to open up spaces to talk, promote and struggle for the relevance of addressing learning diversities. This includes current and new directions for theoretical and methodological discussions. They concern spaces of interaction and diversity research across single and multiple moments, different contexts and various time scales. They also explore the diversity of theories used to address these issues and how we theorize the relationship between centres and margins in understanding the idea of opening spaces for dialogue."

Scholars and citizens tend to assume that rationality guides the decision-making of our leaders. Brian C. Rathbun suggests, however, that if we understand rationality to be a cognitive style premised on a commitment to objectivity and active deliberation, rational leaders are in fact the exception not the norm. Using a unique combination of methods including laboratory bargaining experiments, archival-based case studies, quantitative textual analysis and high-level interviews, Rathbun questions some of the basic assumptions about rationality and leadership, with profound implications for the field of international relations. Case studies of Bismarck and Richelieu show that the rationality of realists makes them rare. An examination of Churchill and Reagan, romantics in international politics who sought to overcome obstacles in their path through force of will and personal agency, show what less rationality looks like in foreign policy making.
In criminal cases, practitioners such as police officers, crime scene investigators, pathologists, prosecutors, and judges are expected to make decisions that are objective and impartial. However, research since the 1960's into so-called confirmation bias provides persuasive scientific evidence that humans are unable to do so. As flawed investigations and proceedings come to light, the importance of undertaking proper bias mitigation measures is clear. Confirmation Bias in Criminal Cases takes a multi-disciplinary approach to a complex, real-world issue. It lays out the chronology of criminal investigations and proceedings, and assesses how bias plays a role in each stage. It also offers research-based strategies to combat bias, such as independent review, contextual information management, linear sequential unmasking, and structured evaluations of the evidence. This book is vital reading for anyone involved in the criminal justice system. It not only gives a holistic view of the human element of confirmation bias but it also offers strategies for how to address it.
This book is the result of a collaboration between a human editor and an artificial intelligence algorithm to create a machine-generated literature overview of research articles analyzing importance of critical thinking in Educational Settings. It’s a new publication format in which state-of-the-art computer algorithms are applied to select the most relevant articles published in Springer Nature journals and create machine-generated literature reviews by arranging the selected articles in a topical order and creating short summaries of these articles. This book is a comprehensive guide to critical thinking research in education. It explores different definitions of critical thinking and its importance in specialized fields like business, engineering, and science. Presenting research on assessment, this resource delves into the integration of ICT tools for teaching critical thinking. With practical tools, strategies and tasks to develop critical thinking skills, this book is intended for researchers, educators, and those seeking to improve their critical thinking abilities.
