Caring for the Dead in Ancient Israel
A new reconstruction of cultic practices surrounding death in ancient Israel In Caring for the Dead in Ancient Israel, Kerry M. Sonia examines the commemoration and care for the dead in ancient Israel against the broader cultural backdrop of West Asia. This cult of dead kin, often referred to as ancestor cult, comprised a range of ritual practices in which the living provided food and drink offerings, constructed commemorative monuments, invoked the names of the dead, and protected their remains. This ritual care negotiated the ongoing relationships between the living and the dead and, in so doing, helped construct social, political, and religious landscapes in relationship to the past. Sonia explores the nature of this cult of dead kin in ancient Israel, focusing on its role within the family and household as well as its relationship to Israel’s national deity and the Jerusalem temple. The Body
The clothed and adorned body has been at the forefront of Nili S. Fox's scholarship. In her hallmark approach, she draws on theoretical models from anthropology and archaeology, and locates the text within its native cultural environment in conversation with ancient Near Eastern literary and iconographic sources. Mighty Baal
Mighty Baal: Essays in Honor of Mark S. Smith is the first edited collection devoted to the study of the ancient Near Eastern god Baal. Although the Bible depicts Baal as powerless, the combined archaeological, iconographic, and literary evidence makes it clear that Baal was worshipped throughout the Levant as a god whose powers rivalled any deity. Ezekiel’s Sign-Acts
The Ezekiel passages describing the instructions for, and dramatization of, divine messages (Ezekiel 3-5; 12; 24; 37) are among the most bizarre in the Hebrew Bible. The prophet is commanded to embody his message of judgment to Jerusalem, and these actions clarify the oracles they surround. Yet, these sign-acts are frequently overlooked within Ezekiel studies, which tend to focus on the book’s strange visions and controversial oracles. This volume addresses the growing diversity in approaches in Ezekiel studies by inviting international senior and junior scholars to focus on the texts concerning Ezekiel’s sign-acts. It aims to redirect scholarly attention to these often-ignored texts, which stand so central to understanding the nature of prophecy as well as the overall book of Ezekiel.
