The Transnational Middle East

The Middle East has been undergoing new crises since the powerful socio-political uprisings known as the Arab Spring took place in several countries in 2011. Some countries are experiencing a long-term collapse of their political and social structures out of internal conflicts and external interventions. The Transnational Middle East posits that, in the Middle East, the development of regional dynamics, of processes and circulations of all kinds, can be documented. In this regard, the approaches it develops — ‘bottom-up’ regionalisation, ‘globalisation from below’ — allow for a better understanding of the ways in which the Middle East is part of global transformations. The book a...

The Paranoid Style in American Diplomacy

A new history of Middle East oil and the deep roots of American violence in Iraq. Iraq has been the site of some of the United States' longest and most sustained military campaigns since the Vietnam War. Yet the origins of US involvement in the country remain deeply obscured—cloaked behind platitudes about advancing democracy or vague notions of American national interests. With this book, Brandon Wolfe-Hunnicutt exposes the origins and deep history of US intervention in Iraq. The Paranoid Style in American Diplomacy weaves together histories of Arab nationalists, US diplomats, and Western oil execs to tell the parallel stories of the Iraq Petroleum Company and the resilience of Iraqi soci...

The focus of international financial reform in recent years has largely been at the global level, in terms of improving the international financial architecture, and at the national level in terms of getting domestic economic and structural policies right. But there is also a growing appetite for addressing some issues at a regional level. This debate has focused on improving regional policy dialogue and surveillance processes, as well as developing regional mechanisms to provide financial support to prevent and resolve financial crises. In East Asia, for example, governments have sought deeper regional policy dialogue by the creation of ASEAN+3 forum and enhanced financial cooperation by setting up the Chiang Mai Initiative. These developments raise many questions: What is 'best-practice' regional policy dialogue? How is a regional financial architecture complementary to the global architecture? What sorts of institutions work well at a regional level? Do regions need a regional monetary fund? What is going on in East Asia and how is it different to other regions? This volume brings together a range of policy, practical and conceptual papers to explore these and other issues.

This book is both a history and contemporary analysis. Charting the main turnpoints as the growth of cities, trade routes, the petroleum industry and growth of the authoritarian state the author argues that central bureaucratic control is limiting growth. He describes the state as governed by the interests of the ruling family who continue to block opportunities for social mobility. He is also critical of the lack of a broad, productive base in the economy, the export of capital and its effect on investment in local resources, as well as the technological dependence on the West.

ÒThe Arab Spring was defeated neither in the byways of Tahrir Square nor in the souk of Aleppo,Ó he explains. ÒIt was defeated roundly in the palaces of Riyadh and Ankara as well as in Washington, DC and Paris.Ó Ê The heart of t...

Yusif Sayigh

An acclaimed economist and lifelong Palestinian nationalist Yusif Sayigh (1916-2004) came of age at a time of immense political change in the Middle East. Born in al-Bassa, near Acre in northern Palestine, he was witness to the events that led to the loss of Palestine and his memoir therefore constitutes a vivid social history of the region, as well as a revealing firsthand account of the Palestinian national movement almost from its earliest inception. Family and everyday life, co-villagers, landscapes, pleasures, outings, schooling, and political figures recreate the vanished world of Sayigh's formative years in the Levant. An activist in Palestine, he was taken prisoner of war by the Isra...
