This book provides a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the various schools of Qur'anic exegesis, from the earliest periods through to the present day. Employing a comparative-contrastive methodology, the author examines traditional and rational schools of thought – such as the Mu’tazili, Shi’i, Ibadi, Sufi, metaphysical, modern, and scientific approaches to the interpretation of the Qur’an – to give a detailed analysis of the similarities and differences in their theological views. The study spans a broad period, covering exegetical techniques adopted in Qur’anic exegesis from its infancy during the 1st/7th century up to the beginning of the 15th/21st century. Furnished with copious micro- and macro-level examples which explicate the Qur’anic notions and the points of view relevant to each school and exegetical approach, the book provides a rounded empirical study of Islamic thought. This thorough and holistic historical investigation is an important contribution to the study of Qur’anic exegesis and Islamic theology, and as such will be of enormous interest to scholars of religion, philosophy and Islamic studies.

Beyond Reasonable Doubt

When Salman Curtis set foot on the steamer bound from London to Calcutta, he had no inkling of the adventures that awaited him as an Anglo-Indian police officer. His postings take him from sleepy villages to bustling towns, from panchayats to court rooms, from investigating petty crimes to heart-wrenching murders and dacoity. This book describes some of the most horrifying crimes he becomes a witness to, charting in detail the investigative techniques that led them to find the culprit. Unfolding the life and times of late 19th century India, Beyond Reasonable Doubt is a well-researched compendium of investigations undertaken under the British Raj, that laid the foundation for many crime-solving techniques used till date.

Music in Colonial Punjab

This book offers the first social history of music in undivided Punjab (1800-1947), beginning at the Lahore court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and concluding at the Patiala royal darbar. It unearths new evidence for the centrality of female performers and classical music in a region primarily viewed as a folk music centre, featuring a range of musicians and dancers -from 'mirasis' (bards) and 'kalawants' (elite musicians), to 'kanjris' (subaltern female performers) and 'tawaifs' (courtesans). A central theme is the rise of new musical publics shaped by the anglicized Punjabi middle classes, and British colonialists' response to Punjab's performing communities. The book reveals a diverse connoisseurship for music with insights from history, ethnomusicology, and geography on an activity that still unites a region now divided between India and Pakistan.

Jussive Particles and Nouns in Classical Arabic (CA) and Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) Conditional Sentences

The jussive particles and nouns in Arabic conditional sentences in Classical and Modern Standard Arabic are a crucial aspect of Arabic grammar that has not been extensively explored. Focusing on the Qur‘anic and al-Ḥadith corpora representing Classical Arabic, and the University of Leipzig corpora of Modern Standard Arabic, this book explores and compares frequency of occurrences of the particles and nouns of the jussive conditional sentences such as: ʾin, ʾidhmā, man, mā, ʾayyuhum, ʾayyu ḥīn, matā, ʾannā, ʾaina, and ḥaithumā in CA and MSA. The collocation and colligation phenomena of those particles and nouns are presented to understand and open up the expanse of the syntax construction of the jussive moods in conditional sentences in both Arabic variants. This corpus-based study reveals significant points in their usage and syntactic structures providing valuable insights into their main similarities and differences in both Arabic variants.
