"Body Work" in Home-Based Substance Abuse Care
Abstract: This study examines "body work" in the context of home-based substance abuse care in Finland, which is provided to adults with intoxicant problems and needing short- and long-term support in their everyday lives. This article is concerned specifically with body work, which can be defined as care work focusing directly on the bodies of others. Through a twofold analysis of 13 audio-recorded home visits and ethnographic field notes, it examines what body work is in home-based substance abuse care, how close body work is and how workers and clients negotiate about it. The study shows that home as a site of care has an impact on substance abuse care. The worker's home visit settles into a tension relation between private and public even if the care is a part of weekly routine. Hyvinvointityön tekijät kohtaavat erilaisissa haavoittavissa elämäntilanteissa olevia ihmisiä keskellä heidän arkeaan. Asiakkaat saattavat tarvita tukea mielenterveyden hallintaan, fyysisiin sairauksiin, raitistumisen, toipumisen ja kuntoutumisen haasteisiin tai vaikkapa vanhuuden mukanaan tuomiin vaikeuksiin. Teoksessa selvitetään, minkälaisia merkityksiä kodilla on haavoittuvuuden kohtaamisen, sanoittamisen, kokemisen ja lievittämisen paikkana. Hyvinvointityön siirtyminen laitoksista koteihin sisältää paljon mahdollisuuksia, kuten ihmisen itsemääräämisoikeuden ja yhteisöihin integroitumisen vahvistumisen. Toisaalta se saattaa kuitenkin tarkoittaa turvattomuutta, eristyneisyyttä, täyttämättömiä tarpeita ja kohtuutonta sinnittelyä arjessa. Teos on ajankohtainen puheenvuoro hyvinvointipalveluiden kehittämisestä ja hyvinvointityön tekemisen arjesta. Siinä on hyödynnetty etnometodologiaan ja ihmismaantieteeseen sitoutunutta vuorovaikutuksen tutkimusta. Aineistoina on käytetty kotikäyntien nauhoituksia, tutkijan kenttäpäiväkirjoja sekä työntekijä- ja asiakashaastatteluja.

Reformation and Everyday Life
The European reformations meant major changes in theology, religion, and everyday life. Some changes were immediate and visible in a number of countries: monasteries were dissolved, new liturgies were introduced, and married pastors were ordained, others were more hidden.
