Trees Like Stones

Trees Like Stones

Klaus Merkel has been photographing stones, rocky landscapes and trees for over thirty years, which he pairs up in double pictures. He portrays the outstanding harmony between the animate and the inanimate, between natural and designed manifestations. Fascinating affinities become visible when he shows the limestone blocks of the Great Pyramid of Giza alongside basalt cliffs in Northern Ireland, and the cultivated lime-tree walkway of a castle grounds next to the nave of a cathedral. As the forest of figures and pinnacles of Milan Cathedral is placed next to the sandstone columns of Bryce Canyon, fascinating connections between natural form and art emerge. The book thus invites the reader to examine and compare the multiple similarities of the surfaces' structures of natural as well as artificial objects. He has studied archeology, art history, and painting. ILLUSTRATIONS: 94 *

Despite the specific nature of their work, a number of cross-references can be established between the artists René Daniëls, Michael Krebber and Klaus Merkel. Although known primarily as painters they also examine other issues and questions that concern the mediation context of art, the role of the artist, the conception and reception of pictures, and the very effectiveness of media. The curator Hans-Jürgen Hafner compares their early and current works in an exhibition that presents a field of investigation centring on key concepts of interpretation such as aesthetics and concept, painting and ideology, object and context, display and perception. The formal diversity and thematic emphasis of this exhibition are intended as a stimulus to further discussion. Album der Steine

As in his previous book The Reading of Time in the Text of Nature, photographer and artist Klaus Merkel continues to search for-and record in striking black-and-white photographs-structures in nature and architecture that, no matter where they are, exhibit overlapping patterns and configurations, significant deviations and parallels, and resonate in juxtaposition. In this extension of that program, he has turned his attention to stones and rock landscapes and their patterns. It is a process that he insists takes patience, sometimes years, both in allowing the force of the photograph to make itself felt over time and in seeking the perfect pair, the other photograph that will reverberate with another in tandem. A creative dialogue unfolds. The pairs of pictures grow together completely imperceptibly and naturally.

Klaus Merkel's coupled photographs mirror the physical and spiritual patterns of both natural and architectural structures. They demonstrate fundamental and universal formal laws in their compelling revelation of inseparably intertwined nature and culture. The pictures are grouped according to such themes as stratification, crystallization, the vegetable world, and inside/outside.

Hornbook

"The special thing about hornbook ... is the sequencing of the 165 images in this volume, which is appropriate to his method of working and exhibition practice. Namely, the artist creates series of images, clusters or rhythms in order to distinguish the marks in his images as form and color signals without messages. He himself commented on the matter, saying that one sees only that which comes across via the subjective mood. The images have no narrative and are also not intended for the processing of abstractions. You can either perceive them physically, or reject them."--

German-American relations have become interesting again. U.S. President Donald Trump’s lukewarm policy toward Europe has ensured that the relationship between Berlin and Washington is once again regarded as an important field of scholarship within global politics. And yet it was only a few years ago that German-American relations seemed to take second place to transatlantic relations in general, and the European Union (EU)–USA relationship in particular. The advent of Donald Trump as US President in January 2017 has made all the difference. Trump’s difficult personal relationship with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and his denigration of everything the Western world – including the...
