The building of the Garstang & Knot End Railway (there was one T for most of the 19th century) was sanctioned by Act of Parliament on the 16th June, 1864. The final length to Knott End did not open until 29 July, 1908. Forty four years to build a railway just over 11 miles in length. This book is the story of the "progress" of the line and the problems that were encountered. There are some excerpts from contemporary histories of the area and then a chronological account of the building of the railway. The route taken is shown with photographs of the remains of the track bed and railway buildings. There are some plans and technical details but the book is not strictly for rail enthusiasts. There is a section on incidents and accidents.

Knott's Berry Farm

Before there was a Disneyland, there was Knott's Berry Farm. What started out in the early 1920s as a small, roadside berry stand in Buena Park, California, grew over the next 60 years into one of the most popular amusement parks in the world. Its founder, Walter Knott, along with his wife and family, knew no boundaries when it came to expanding his small berry market and tearoom into the world-famous Chicken Dinner Restaurant and later adding his ultimate achievement, Ghost Town. This book documents the early history of Knott's Berry Farm, featuring over 200 rarely seen images.

What was mothering like in the past? When acclaimed historian Sarah Knott became pregnant, she asked herself this question. But accounts of motherhood are hard to find. For centuries, historians have concerned themselves with wars, politics and revolutions, not the everyday details of carrying and caring for a baby. Much to do with becoming a mother, past or present, is lost or forgotten. Using the arc of her own experience, from miscarriage to the birth and early babyhood of her two children, and drawing on letters, diaries, court records and paintings, Sarah Knott explores the ever-changing experiences of maternity across the ages. From the labour pains felt by an enslaved woman to the tri...
