Er ist die erste biografische Darstellung des Vorreiters auf den Gebieten der altnordischen Rechtsgeschichte, Volkskunde und Sagaforschung, die in Buchform erscheint. Der Münchner Professor an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität bereiste persönlich Island im Jahr 1858, war Sagensammler und Experte zur Geschichte Islands und Norwegens. Außerdem war Maurer ein wichtiger Unterstützer der von Jón Sigurðsson angeführten isländischen Unabhängigkeitsbewegung. Er zählt zu den höchst geschätzten aller Islandfreunde.
