Early Printed Books as Material Objects
The papers collected in this volume discuss descriptive methods and present conclusions relevant for the history of the book production and reception. Books printed in Europe in the 15th and 16th century still had much in common with manuscripts. They are not mere textual sources, but also material objects whose physical make-up and individual features need to be taken into account in library projects for cataloguing and digitization.
The Silver Library of Duke Albrecht of Prussia and his wife Anna Maria
The Silver Library ( Silber Bibliothek) of Albrecht, Duke of Prussia, and his wife Anna Maria is an absolutely unique collection of volumes bound in richly decorated precious metal. It was founded between the end of the 1540s and the beginning of the 1560s as a manifestation of the splendor of the ducal court and a deep reverence for the Word of God and Lutheran thought. Originally it consisted of twenty items mainly created in goldsmith workshops in Königsberg, Nuremberg and probably Münden. This monograph gives a historical overview of the Silver Library against the background of the ducal couple’s lives as well as the culture of the 16th-century Prussia. It also presents an analysis of the bindings as examples of the Renaissance and Mannerist art of goldsmithing.
Failed Methods and Ideology in Canonical Interpretation of Biblical Texts
This volume by the late Bernd J. Diebner presents an anthology of studies previously published only in German from 1971 to 2020 on a wide range of topics in biblical studies. The 18 essays in this collection offer profound insight into the works of German scholarship which have strongly influenced biblical studies and related research in the 20th century. Being an important, but lesser recognized ‘member’ of the Copenhagen school, Diebner voiced serious criticism of contemporary biblical scholarship which is discussed in the first seven chapters. The remaining chapters offer challenging new perspectives on well-known themes, narratives, and compositions related to history, ideology, and archaeology, on the one hand, and text and canon, on the other, as alternatives to traditional historical–critical approaches. Now published in English for the first time, this volume makes these essays available to Anglophone students and scholars of biblical and ancient Near Eastern studies.
Cornelius Henrici Hoen (Honius) and his Epistle on the Eucharist (1525)
This book is about Cornelius Henrici Hoen and his well-known treatise on the Eucharist, published in 1525, and answers questions like: Who actually was Hoen? What made him dissent from the current belief in transubstantiation? What were the sources of his dissent, and what was his relationship to famous contemporaries like Erasmus, Luther, Zwingli and Bucer? And how influential has his treatise been? After a more detailed portrait of Hoen’s life, the chapters on the origins of his ideas establish that Hoen was not only dependent on Erasmus and Luther, but actually revived age-old heretical arguments, first proposed in the high Middle Ages and later defended by Hus and Wyclif, and popularized by Lollards and Hussites in the late medieval Burgundian Netherlands. The book also describes Hoen’s influence on Reformation thought, and contains an edition of the original Latin text and of a contemporary German translation.
The Bible as Political Artifact
Biblical studies and the teaching of biblical studies are clearly changing, though it is less clear what the changes mean and how we should evaluate them. Susanne Scholz casts a feminist eye on the politics of pedagogy, higher education, and wider society, decrypting important developments in "the architecture of educational power." She also examines how the increasingly intercultural, interreligious, and diasporic dynamics in society inform the hermeneutical and methodological possibilities for biblical exegesis. From Gutenberg to Luther
Printed book cultures in Scandinavia before 1525 were formed by their vicinity to expanding European book markets. Collections of prints were founded, decisions on printing books in Scandinavia were based upon thorough knowledge of what printers on the continent achieved in question of volume, quality and price. Building on a large database of contemporary provenances and statistical analyses of every possible aspect of peripheral book markets, as well as on new readings of many old and new sources, this book recalibrates scholarly looks on Scandinavian book history before the Reformation. The result is a fresh portrait of a dynamic period in cultural history which places Scandinavia, though in the geographical periphery of Europe, in the middle of European printing.

This collection of essays engages with a variety of aspects of early modern book culture in the 16th-17th centuries, considered in the Catholic context. The contributions reflect on the engagement of institutions and authorities in the process of book production, bringing to the fore the role of networks in this process; show the book as a tool of resistance to the Protestant Reformation; give insight into the content and design of book collections; showcase textual production in the context of cultural appropriation and shed light on the role of the image in the propagation of Catholicism.
