Ageing and Dementia
Epidemiological studies, modern clinical, neuroimaging, neuropsychological, molecular biological, and genetic studies have considerably enhanced our knowledge about ageing processes of the human brain, its sequelae, diagnostic, and therapeutic possibilities and limits. In addition to Alzheimer's disease and other degenerative dementias, the impact of cerebrovascular lesions and their risk factors in the pathogenesis of cognitive disorders of the aged are increasingly acknowledged, and the recognition of mild cognitive impairment as a frequent initial stage of developing dementia is becoming an increasingly important diagnostic and therapeutic problem. The included papers were presented at the 7th International Symposium in Graz, Sept. 2001 and give a timely overview of the current and future concepts of pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment strategies of pathological brain ageing and dementias, early recognition of mild cognitive impairment and future possiblities of prevention of dementing processes.
Advances in Dementia Research
Dementia is a major health problem that becomes increasingly common with advancing age. Despite recent progress in neurobiology and molecular genetics, the aetiology and pathogenesis of most dementia disorders are still poorly understood, and early exact diagnosis as a prerequisite of effective treatment needs to be improved. The present volume includes the contributions of renowned experts in the field of neurodegeneration presented at the International Symposium "Ageing and Dementia 1999”, September 24–26, 1999 at Graz. It focusses on genetics, epidemiology, new neuroimaging techniques, and the role of vascular, immunological and other mechanisms including oxidative stress and estrogens in the development of neurodegeneration and dementia. Recent developments in diagnosis and therapy of Alzheimer disease and related disorders are reviewed and future therapeutic approaches are discussed. New Trends in the Diagnosis and Therapy of Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer ́s Disease (AD), the most frequent cause of mental decline in the elderly represents one of the major health problems facing modern society. Despite considerable progress in the clinical diagnosis, epidemiology, structural basis, biochemistry, molecular genetics, and pharmacological aspects of AD, its etiology, molecular backgrounds, and treatment challenges are still poorly understood. This volume based on the 2nd International Symposium of EBEWE Research Initiative in October 1993 in Salzburg, Austria, is conceived as a review of our current knowledge of morphology, diagnostic clinical and imaging techniques, methodological approaches of cognitive assessment, trial designs, outcome variables and possibilities of therapy of AD and other neurodegenerative disorders. The book ́s coverage is broad and it should be of interest for investigators, clinicians, and researchers involved in the problems of AD.
New Trends in the Diagnosis and Therapy of Non-Alzheimer’s Dementia
This volume gives an overview of the present state of art on the classification, neuropathology, clinical presentation, neuropsychology, diagnosis, neuroimaging and therapeutic possibilities in non-Alzheimer’s dementias, an increasingly important group of CNS diseases, which account for 7 to 30% of dementing disorders in adults and aged subjects, and thus, represent the second most frequent cause of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease. The monograph provides the newest information for neurologists, psychiatrists, dementia research workers, dementia clinicians, neuropathologists, neurobiologists, and practicing physicians.

The scientific work of Walther Birkmayer is grounded on his ability to turn what was often a mass of clinical details into the basis for a hypothesis for a new therapeutic approach toward solving the problems of a patient's illness. Therapy of Malignant Brain Tumors
The tumors of the brain similar to other pathological changes of that particular organ claim for a separate position in scientific medicine regarding biology, morphology, features of clinical manifestation, diagnostics and therapy. During the past years due to rapid progress in basic neurosciences and medical biotechnics the situation of the neuroclinician in front of brain tumors has been dramatically changed. The prerequisites for early and accurate diagnosis as well as for successful treatment also of malignant neoplasms have increased and remarkably improved. At the same time the information necessary for an appropriate pragmatic use of the available cognitive methods and therapeutic means increased along the same scale and is permanently being critically modified or changed due to fundamental new insights which come up in always shorter intervals. These facts necessitate the preparation of publications in which the state of the art is presented in possible completeness, systematic order and proper disposability for rational management and therapeutic strategies.
