Traditionally the Chinese burn joss paper (ghost money) for their ancestors so that they can enjoy their afterlives. In recent times, consumer culture has taken hold and these offerings have become more elaborate to reflect the desires of those who are still alive. In an increasingly westernised society, designer handbags, laptop computers, iPods and fast food made out of paper are instead burnt for the recently deceased. In Case it Rains in Heaven is a fascinating visual portrait of the modern manifestations of this ancient tradition.

The Queen, The Chairman and I is a saga of love, hope, and tragedy: a storybook that both uncovers family secrets and reveals the impact of political and economic forces on individuals. It deals with themes of multiculturalism and migration, heritage and empire. Kurt Tong's paternal grandfather was a deckhand who arrived in Hong Kong from Shanghai after the fall of the last imperial Chinese dynasty in 1911. His mother's family were landlords in Southern China. By coming to Hong Kong, they almost certainly escaped death at the hands of Mao's advancing Communist armies. Kurt Tong himself grew up in Hong Kong, singing the British National Anthem throughout his school years. At the age of 13, he...

Prix Elysée

A wonderfully illustrated volume that documents the fourth edition of the Prix Elysée prize for photography. The Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne, one of the most renowned photography museums in Europe, has awarded the Prix Elysée biannually since 2014 to promising photographers or artists using photography. This book documents the Prix Elysée's fourth edition. It features the work submitted by the eight nominees Alexa Brunet, Arguine Escandón and Yann Gross, Magali Koenig, Thomas Mailaender, Moises Saman, Assaf Shoshan, Alys Tomlinson, and Kurt Tong. Sketches, first drafts, and photographic studies illustrate the progress of their projects, from initial concept to image selection and design. Conversations with the artists published alongside the images reflect on the artists' close collaboration with the museum and expand on the visual portfolios. The individual creative process thus becomes visible, and at the same time, a cross-section of contemporary art photography production emerges.

U.S. Army Campaigns of the Civil War: The Civil War in the West, 1863

The Civil War in the West, 1863, by Andrew N. Morris, is the latest addition to the Center of Military History's U.S. Army Campaigns of the Civil War series. In 1863, Union and Confederate forces fought for control of Chattanooga, a key rail center. The Confederates were victorious at nearby Chickamauga in September. However, renewed fighting in Chattanooga that November provided Union troops a victory, control of the city, and drove the Confederates south into Georgia. The Union success left its armies poised to invade the Deep South the following year.
