Social Life of Orangutans in Kutai National Park, East Kalimantan, Indonesia
In the begining of 1970's, much attentions were paid to wild orang utan by several researches such as J. Mackinnon (1974), D.A. Harr (1972), P. Rodman (1973), B. Galdikas (1974) and H. Rijksen (1975). The lowland Dipterocarpus forest of East Kalimantan was suffered from bih forest fires and droughts in 1982-83. Ecological studys on orangutans have been done in Kutai national park, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, since 1983, just after the forest fires, by the author. Before that P. Rodman (1973) studied ecology of orangutans in same study area in 1970-71. The results will be compared between before the fires and after. The populations density of orangutans was estimated as 1 individual par 1 km2 in this study, but it was 3.0 par 1 km2 by Rodman (1973).
