The Deep Proterozoic Crust in the North Atlantic Provinces

The Proterozoic terrains of South Scandinavia and the Grenville Province in North-America have many common features : Regional high grade metamorphism (Granulite-facies), anorthosites, etc. They are separated by the Caledonian orogeny and, above all, by the Atlantic Ocean. During the time of the great continental drift controversy, few people were ready to admit that both sides on the Atlantic were once an unique province. Now everybody agrees on the Post-paleozoic age of the Atlantic and, consequently, on the intrinsic homogeneity of the much older. rocks which occur around it. But a detailed comparison is not easy. The Grenville Province is much larger than South Scandinavia, both regions ...

Geological Evolution of the Mediterranean Basin

The Mediterranean Sea, nestled between Africa, southern Europe, and the Middle East, may be envisioned as a complex picture-puzzle comprising numerous intricate pieces, many of which are already in place. A general image, in terms of science, has emerged, although at this time large gaps are noted and some areas of the picture remain fuzzy and indistinct. In recent years this fascinating, mind-teasing puzzle image has become clearer with individual pieces more easily recognized and rapidly emplaced, largely by means of multidisciplinary and multinational team efforts. In this respect, the Special Program Panel on Marine Sciences of the NATO Scientific Af fairs Division considered the merits ...

Observation of the Continental Crust through Drilling II

The purpose of this book is to inform geoscientists about the progress made in scientific continental deep drilling as a new method for studying the continental crust. The Seeheim symposium was the second meeting organized for experts of the various national programs to present and discuss the results and progress made in their respective programs since the first symposium in Tarrytown in 1984. Various contributors dealt with the present state of - and experience in - deep drilling techniques as well as with the development of logging tools for drilling at high temperatures. Special emphasis was laid on the Continental Deep Drilling Program of the Federal Republic of Germany and its scientific aims.
