The twelfth edition of this classic reference work includes: - More than 2,000 new entries - A total of more than 9,000 entries - New features and enhancement of the familiar old features - Mapping information on more than 4,000 genes of known function - Information on specific point mutations responsible for more than 700 genetic disorders or neoplasms Mendelian Inheritance in Man (MIM) is a genetic knowledgebase that serves clinical medicine and biomedical research, including the Human Genome Project. It aims to be comprehensive (not only complete, but also collated, integrated, and interpreted), authoritative (not only accurate but also sound in its interpretations and judgements), and ti...

This book aims to offer the accumulated fertile experience of treating drug-resistant epileptic patients collected over the past few decades, focusing on aspects of neurology, neurosurgery, emergency care, critical care medicine and basic medical research. Refractory status epilepticus is one of the most common severe and acute diseases in neurology and neurocritical care; it is also the main cause of death in epileptic patients. In the context of prevention and treatment processes, it is not only necessary to terminate epileptic seizures, but to also address the disruption of the patient’s internal environment and provide critical life support. Effective treatment calls for multi-discipli...

Congenital Neurotransmitter Disorders

Congenital Neurotransmitter Disorders

Congenital neurotransmitter disorders are nowadays recognised as important causes of severe, progressive encephalopathies mostly of early onset. They are ultraorphan diseases and numerous experiences confirm again and again that diagnosis and treatment of patients is often almost regularly delayed for many years, if ever at all. Specific therapeutic approaches which can lead to excellent outcomes, especially if instituted early, are thereby withheld from patients and their families. The diagnosis of these disorders is almost exclusively based on clinical signs and symptoms leading to measurement of metabolites in CSF, specifically the quantitative determination of the neurotransmitters or th...

Salivary Bioscience

This book provides the first comprehensive overview of the emerging field of interdisciplinary salivary bioscience. It serves as a foundational reference guide to the collection, analysis, and interpretation of salivary data, as well as its myriad applications in medicine, surveillance and public health. The ease and non-invasive nature of saliva collection makes it highly useful in diverse fields such as pediatrics, dentistry, neuroscience, psychology, animal welfare and precision medicine. This book introduces students and scientists alike to the vast potential of salivary bioscience in both research and practice.

Prevention and Management of Osteoporosis

Prevention and Management of Osteoporosis

Bone is hard tissue that is in a constant state of flux being built up by bone-forming cells called osteoblasts while also being broken down or resorbed by cells known as osteoclasts. During childhood and adolescence bone formation is dominant; bone length and girth increase with age ending at early adulthood when peak bone mass is attained. Males generally exhibit a longer growth period resulting in bones of greater size and overall strength. In males after the age of 20 bone resorbtion becomes predominant and bone mineral content declines about 4% per decade. Females tend to maintain peak mineral content until menopause at which time it declines about 15% per decade. Osteoporosis is a dise...

The Role of Transcranial Doppler Sonography in the Management of Pediatric Hydrocephalus

Negative influence of cerebral circulation with the emergence of cerebral hypoperfusion plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of pediatric hydrocephalus. Transcranial Doppler sonography is a non-invasive method for indirectly measuring intracranial pressure and decreasing intracranial compliance by assessing changes of cerebral circulation. This book discusses the cerebral circulation and intracranial dynamics in pediatric hydrocephalus. It also focuses on evaluating the impact of various intracranial factors on Doppler parameters of cerebral circulation, especially in neonates with hydrocephalus. The ambition of this work is to improve indication and timing of drainage procedure in children with hydrocephalus by applying scientific results and clinical experience.
