Handbook of Social Sciences and Global Public Health

This handbook highlights the relevance of the social sciences in global public health and their significantly crucial role in the explanation of health and illness in different population groups, the improvement of health, and the prevention of illnesses around the world. Knowledge generated via social science theories and research methodologies allows healthcare providers, policy-makers, and politicians to understand and appreciate the lived experience of their people, and to provide sensitive health and social care to them at a time of most need. Social sciences, such as medical sociology, medical anthropology, social psychology, and public health are the disciplines that examine the socio...

Cashmere

Cashmere, in the exact center of Washington State, has centuries of settler and Indian history. The Wenatchi called the area Nt'wt'c'kum, and it was later renamed Mission in honor of the work of Catholic priests Charles Marie Pandosy, Urban Grassi, and Stephen de Rougé. Mission then welcomed its first settler, Alexander Bartholomäus Brender; the future commander of the Civil War's Army of the Potomac, George McClellan; and the Great Northern Railway. In 1904, Judge James H. Chase led the town's rechristening as Cashmere. It grew from a frontier train stop into an established community with lush orchards and prominent enterprises like the Cashmere Valley Record, the Cashmere Valley Bank, and the Cashmere Museum. Today, its world-class goods and produce, like Aplets & Cotlets and Crunch Pak sliced apples, sit on store shelves internationally. Come explore this global community and still fiercely independent piece of the Pacific Northwest.

Mortality and Maldevelopment

Congenital malformations are worldwide occurrences striking in every condition of society. These severe physical abnormalities which are present at birth and affecting every part of the body happen more often than usually realized, once in every 33 births. The most common, after heart defects, are those of the neural tube (the brain and spinal cord) which happen in as many as one in every 350 births. They have been noted as curiousities in man and beast throughout recorded history and received great attention in our time by various fields of study, for example, their faulty prenatal development by embryologists, familial patterns by geneticists, causation by environmentalists and variability...

The International Relations of the Persian Gulf

Gregory Gause's masterful book is the first to offer a comprehensive account of the international politics in the Persian Gulf across nearly four decades. The story begins in 1971 when Great Britain ended its protectorate relations with the smaller states of the lower Gulf. It traces developments in the region from the oil 'revolution' of 1973–4 through the Iranian revolution, the Iran-Iraq war and the Gulf war of 1990–1 to the toppling of Saddam Hussein in the American-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, bringing the story of Gulf regional politics up to 2008. The book highlights transnational identity issues, regime security and the politics of the world oil market, and charts the changing mix of interests and ambitions driving American policy. The author brings his experience as a scholar and commentator on the Gulf to this riveting account of one of the most politically volatile regions on earth.
