Significant progress in the science and technology of the mechanical behaviour of materials has been made in recent years. The greatest strides forward have occurred in the field of advanced materials with high performance, such as ceramics, composite materials, and intermetallic compounds. The Sixth International Conference on Mechanical Behaviour of Materials (ICM-6), taking place in Kyoto, Japan, 29 July - 2 August 1991 addressed these issues. The aim of Modeling and Simulation of Microstructure Evolution in Solidifying Alloys is to describe in a clear mathematical language the physics of the solidification structure evolution of cast alloys. The concepts and methodologies presented here for the net-shaped casting and the ingot remelt processes can be applied, with some modifications, to model other solidification processes such as welding and deposition processes. Another aim of the book is to provide simulation examples of the solidification structure modeling in some crucial commercial casting technologies as well as to provide practical techniques for controlling the structure formation during the solidification processes.
The aim of this book is to investigate and explain the rapid advances in the characterization of high temperature crack growth behaviour which have been made in recent years, with reference to industrial applications. Complicated mathematics has been minimized with the emphasis placed instead on finding solutions using simplified procedures without the need for complex numerical analysis.
From concept to application, this book describes the method of strain-range partitioning for analyzing time-dependent fatigue. Creep (time-dependent) deformation is first introduced for monotonic and cyclic loading. Multiple chapters then discuss strain-range partitioning in details for multi-axial loading conditions and how different loading permutations can lead to different micro-mechanistic effects. Notably, the total-strain method of strain-range partitioning (SRP) is described, which is a methodology that sees use in several industries. Examples from aerospace illustrate applications, and methods for predicting time-dependent metal fatigue are critiqued.
