This volume contains the edited version of lectures and selected research contributions presented at the NATO ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE on MECHANICAL BEHA VI OUR OF MATERIALS AT HIGH TEMPERATURE, held in Sesimbra, Portugal, 12th-22nd September 1995, and organized by 1ST-Lisbon Institute of Technology, PortugaL The Institute was attended by 88 participants, including 15 lecturers from 17 countries including five CP countries. The lecturers were leading scientists and technologists from universities, research institutions and industry. The students were mainly young PhD students and junior academic or research staff with postgraduate qualifications (MSc or PhD). Fourteen students were from the ...
Aluminium alloys have undergone a dramatic transformation in areas of extrusion, machining, welding, heat treatment, structural changes, created by ultra fine particles and enhanced corrosion resistance. Hence, these alloys have made rapid gains in European automotive and space industry. These developments have been described by experts in the book with new data and attractive graphics. The effect of processing parameters, including welding and deep rolling on their performance have been highlighted to alleviate the concerns of manufacturers and designers for new applications. The novel role of aluminum alloys in photovoltaic cells and concentrated solar power has been comprehensively described in the context of corrosion and the aggressive environment to which they may be exposed. The book is designed to serve as a guide for future innovations and new developments in aluminium alloys.
In the fall of 1998, Prof. Sergey Firstov invited me to the Frantcevych Institute for Problems of Materials Science (IPMS) in Kyiv, Ukraine to discuss possible collaborations in the area of advanced metals research. During this visit, a strong mutual interest was evident in a broad range of structural metals technologies, and a quick friendship was established. Countless subsequent emails and a reciprocal visit to the U. S Air Force Research Laboratory by Prof. Firstov and a team of scientists from IPMS ensued to discuss and detail a broad collaboration in the area of structural metals. Two years after the initial visit, a major investment by the U. S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research...
Fracture is a major cause of failure in metallic and non-metallic materials and structures. An understanding of the micro- and macro- mechanisms of fracture enables materials scientists to develop materials with high fracture resistance, which in turn helps engineers and designers to ensure the soundness and integrity of structures made from these materials. The International Congress on Fracture is held every four years and is an occasion to take stock of the major achievements in the broad field of fracture, to honour those who have made lasting contributions to this field, and to reflect on the future directions. ICF9 is published in six volumes covering the areas of:-- Failure Analysis, Remaining Life Assessment, Life Extension and Repair- Failure of Multiphase and Non-Metallic Materials- Fatigue of Metallic and Non-Metallic Materials and Structures- Theoretical and Computational Fracture Mechanics and New Directions- Testing and Characterization Methods, and Interfacial Fracture Mechanics- High Strain Rate Fracture and Impact Mechanics.
The role of energy in the modern world goes beyond mere technology and economics to influence welfare, the environment, the quality of life and, in broad terms, civilization itself. Since the industrial revolution, energy conservation technology has been at the forefront of the innovation required to satisfy the needs of mankind and, more than any other, this technology has always depended on the performance of the materials used. In this, the report of the Fifth Li??ge Conference devoted to a review of the work of the European Materials Collaborative Programmes, the results of the programmes are presented along the following technology oriented themes: steam power plant gas turbines diesel engines advanced combustion perspectives. The book thus presents one of the most up to date references available anywhere on materials technologies in energy conversion from fossil fuels and materials for high efficiency, low emission systems.
Although the present edition of Fundamentals of Creep in Metals and Alloys remains broadly up to date for metals, there are a range of improvements and updates that are either desirable, or required, in order to ensure that the book continues to meet the needs of researchers and scholars in the general area of creep plasticity. Besides updating the areas currently covered in the second edition with recent advances, the third edition will broaden its scope beyond metals and alloys to include ceramics, covalent solids, minerals and polymers, thus addressing the fundamentals of creep in all basic classes of materials. - Numerous line drawings with consistent format and units allow easy comparison of the behavior of a very wide range of materials - Transmission electron micrographs provide direct insight into the basic microstructure of metals deforming at high temperatures - Extensive literature review of about 1000 references provides an excellent overview of the field
This issue of ECS Transactions contains papers from the Twelfth International Symposium on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC-XII),a continuing biennial series of symposia. The papers deal with materials for cell components and fabrication methods for components and complete cells. Also contained are papers on cell electrochemical performance and its modelling, stacks and systems, and prototype testing of SOFC demonstration units for different applications.
