Managers Not MBAs

In this sweeping critique of how managers are educated and how, as a consequence, management is practiced, Henry Mintzberg offers thoughtful and controversial ideas for reforming both. “The MBA trains the wrong people in the wrong ways with the wrong consequences,” Mintzberg writes. “Using the classroom to help develop people already practicing management is a fine idea, but pretending to create managers out of people who have never managed is a sham.” Leaders cannot be created in a classroom. They arise in context. But people who already practice management can significantly improve their effectiveness given the opportunity to learn thoughtfully from their own experience. Mintzberg calls for a more engaging approach to managing and a more reflective approach to management education. He also outlines how business schools can become true schools of management.

Organization Design looks at how you need to change the ways your organization does things in order to increase productivity, performance, and profit. Providing the knowledge and method to handle the kind of recurring organisational change that all businesses face, those which do not involve transforming the entire enterprise but which necessitate significant change at the business unit, divisional, functional, facility or local levels. The problem lies in knowing what needs to change and how to change it. Taking the organisation as a designed system, it describes four major elements of organizations: the work - the basic tasks to be done by the organisation and its parts, the people - chara...

You have been recruited by Kaiser Konrad von Hindenskrell of the Prissian Reich to locate and recover a legendary relic told of in old Prissianic tales. This folklore predates the Reich by many centuries, even before Prissia's tribal history. It is said that a fiery sign from the heavens descended to Ert and what was found was an extremely hot, spherical, large rock in a crater. The brave warriors who discovered it were afraid to approach such an obvious sign from the gods, so they posted a sentry and retired for the night. The next morning, they discovered that the cool Prissian night had cooled the rock and it had split open. The interior was hollow but shimmered with a kaleidoscopic array of crystalline colors and contained within was a black iron greatsword with no adornment, constructed in one piece. One of the warriors, one Lütke, took the sword as his own and began on a campaign of conquest. Lütke was killed by a bear a few short years later, so his grand design never saw fruition.

This is a module introducing Polyhedron Games LLC's roleplaying system, KISS: Keep It Simple System(tm) and incorporates all the elements of the system in an expansive scenario. The system employs the concept of a pendulum and such a contraption may be started at it resting or "null" point or it can be started at the highest point in its arc, the "apex." It is further postulated that a pendulum swung from the null point describes an arc from -3 to +3 and swung from the apex, 0 to 6, each point on such arcs represented by a d6, seven in total.

Understanding Organizations...Finally!

The iconic Henry Mintzberg provides a crystal-clear map to the forms and forces that shape all human organizations, synthesizing his fifty years of research. We live in a world of organizations, from our birth in hospitals until our burial by funeral homes. In between, we are educated, employed, entertained, and exasperated by organizations. We had better understand how these strange beasts really work. But where can we go to find out? Welcome to Understanding Organizations . . . Finally! For half a century, Mintzberg has been observing organizations, advising them, engaging them, and escaping them. Here he offers a masterful update and revision of his 1983 classic, Structure in Fives. Belie...

Implementing IT governance in the public sector by use of bootstrap algorithms

It has been argued that the reason seventy percent of all IT projects fail is due to lack of a formal system for guiding and monitoring IT decisions. Organisations having explicit IT governance systems are generally twice as successful as those with poor governance, given the same strategic objectives, but implementing IT governance can be difficult. In this book, Dr. Ogland looks at the public sector and argues that the implementation of IT governance has to be done through bootstrapping. The bootstrap algorithm (BA) is a time-tested approach that is known to work, but it is an approach that breaks with much of the logic of the public sector bureaucracy and is expected to be met with resistance. By analysing patterns in a study of trying to convince a Norwegian public sector organisation to implement IT governance through the use of the BA, the book is able to provide rich insights on what causes failure and how to make the implementation process succeed.

Future Organizational Design

"A major contribution to the field..." ." Gordon B. Davis, Honeywell Professor of Management Information Systems, Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, USA " "This book is required reading for anyone who wants to understand how and why computers influence organization structure. It established a conceptual foundation for the field, and examines the particular characteristics of the tools computer systems provide and what organizational impacts they can be expected to have. The conclusions are sometimes counter-intuitive, but always convincingly argued." Lee L. Gremillion, Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers, USA "This is a superb source for people seeking to learn about organiza...
