Converso Non-Conformism in Early Modern Spain
This book examines the effects of Jewish conversions to Christianity in late medieval Spanish society. Ingram focuses on these converts and their descendants (known as conversos) not as Judaizers, but as Christian humanists, mystics and evangelists, who attempt to create a new society based on quietist religious practice, merit, and toleration. His narrative takes the reader on a journey from the late fourteenth-century conversions and the first blood purity laws (designed to marginalize conversos), through the early sixteenth-century Erasmian and radical mystical movements, to a Counter-Reformation environment in which conversos become the advocates for pacifism and concordance. His account ends at the court of Philip IV, where growing intolerance towards Madrid’s converso courtiers is subtly attacked by Spain’s greatest painter, Diego Velázquez, in his work, Los Borrachos. Finally, Ingram examines the historiography of early modern Spain, in which he argues the converso reform phenomenon continues to be underexplored.
State and Nation Making in Latin America and Spain: Volume 1
The growth of institutional capacity in the developing world has become a central theme in twenty-first-century social science. Many studies have shown that public institutions are an important determinant of long-run rates of economic growth. This book argues that to understand the difficulties and pitfalls of state building in the contemporary world, it is necessary to analyze previous efforts to create institutional capacity in conflictive contexts. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the process of state and nation building in Latin America and Spain from independence to the 1930s. The book examines how Latin American countries and Spain tried to build modern and efficient state institutions for more than a century - without much success. The Spanish and Latin American experience of the nineteenth century was arguably the first regional stage on which the organizational and political dilemmas that still haunt states were faced. This book provides an unprecedented perspective on the development and contemporary outcome of those state and nation-building projects.

In Black and Green, Kiran Asher provides a powerful framework for reconceptualizing the relationship between neoliberal development and social movements. Moving beyond the notion that development is a hegemonic, homogenizing force that victimizes local communities, Asher argues that development processes and social movements shape each other in uneven and paradoxical ways. This book analyzes the first stage of the conflict in Colombia, the twenty-year search for a negotiated settlement which concluded in 2002 with the collapse of peace negotiations, and the transition that took place in 2002 to a new approach to peacemaking under the Uribe administration. Contributors examine the local, regional and international dynamics of the conflict, focusing on the effect of US foreign policy on Colombia and neighboring countries. Included also is discussion of the Colombian drug trade and its impact on attempts for peace and the country's economy; the evolution of Pastrana's 'Plan Colombia'; internal conflict; and the effects of indigenous movements on the current conflict.
La Ciencia Política en Colombia, la construcción de una comunidad académica
Este libro aborda un escenario como es el presente en el que el pasado juega un papel relevante. También es una evidencia de la consolidación de una disciplina, la Ciencia Política, en Colombia. Este libro indaga sobre las fuentes de riesgo del posconflicto colombiano. Lo hace desde la perspectiva de los vínculos generados hace décadas entre los recursos legales y las dinámicas del conflicto armado y la criminalidad en diversas regiones colombianas. A partir de un análisis pormenorizado del banano (en Urabá), el café (en Caldas, Risaralda y Quindío), el carbón (en La Guajira y Cesar), las esmeraldas (en Boyacá), el ferroníquel (en el municipio de Montelíbano, Córdoba), las flores (en la Sabana de Bogotá), el oro (en Chocó, Santander, Tolima y Nariño) y el petróleo (Arauca, Casanare, Meta y el municipio de Barrancabermeja, Santander), el libro sugiere que, más allá del narcotráfico, diferentes actividades económicas se han relacionado con el conflicto armado y la criminalidad, y deberían ser tomadas en cuenta en la formulación de políticas públicas y nuevas agendas de investigación.
