Integral Equation Methods for Evolutionary PDE

Integral Equation Methods for Evolutionary PDE

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of time domain boundary integral equations and their discretisation by convolution quadrature and the boundary element method. Properties of convolution quadrature, based on both linear multistep and Runge–Kutta methods, are explained in detail, always with wave propagation problems in mind. Main algorithms for implementing the discrete schemes are described and illustrated by short Matlab codes; translation to other languages can be found on the accompanying GitHub page. The codes are used to present numerous numerical examples to give the reader a feeling for the qualitative behaviour of the discrete schemes in practice. Applications to acousti...

Retarded Potentials and Time Domain Boundary Integral Equations

This book offers a thorough and self-contained exposition of the mathematics of time-domain boundary integral equations associated to the wave equation, including applications to scattering of acoustic and elastic waves. The book offers two different approaches for the analysis of these integral equations, including a systematic treatment of their numerical discretization using Galerkin (Boundary Element) methods in the space variables and Convolution Quadrature in the time variable. The first approach follows classical work started in the late eighties, based on Laplace transforms estimates. This approach has been refined and made more accessible by tailoring the necessary mathematical tools, avoiding an excess of generality. A second approach contains a novel point of view that the author and some of his collaborators have been developing in recent years, using the semigroup theory of evolution equations to obtain improved results. The extension to electromagnetic waves is explained in one of the appendices.

Fast Boundary Element Methods in Engineering and Industrial Applications

This volume contains eight state of the art contributions on mathematical aspects and applications of fast boundary element methods in engineering and industry. This covers the analysis and numerics of boundary integral equations by using differential forms, preconditioning of hp boundary element methods, the application of fast boundary element methods for solving challenging problems in magnetostatics, the simulation of micro electro mechanical systems, and for contact problems in solid mechanics. Other contributions are on recent results on boundary element methods for the solution of transient problems. This book is addressed to researchers, graduate students and practitioners working on and using boundary element methods. All contributions also show the great achievements of interdisciplinary research between mathematicians and engineers, with direct applications in engineering and industry.

ICIAM 07

The International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) is the worldwide organization of societies which are dedicated primarily or significantly to applied and/or industrial mathematics. The ICIAM Congresses, held every 4 years, are run under the auspices of the Council with the aim to advance the applications of mathematics in all parts of the world. The Sixth ICIAM Congress was held in Zurich, Switzerland, July 16-20, 2007, and was attended by more than 3000 scientists from 47 countries. This volume collects the invited lectures of this Congress, the appreciations of the ICIAM Prize winners' achievements, and the Euler Lecture celebrating the 300th anniversary of Euler. T...

Schwarz-Christoffel Mapping

Schwarz-Christoffel Mapping

This book provides a comprehensive look at the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation, including its history and foundations, practical computation, common and less common variations, and many applications in fields such as electromagnetism, fluid flow, design and inverse problems, and the solution of linear systems of equations. It is an accessible resource for engineers, scientists, and applied mathematicians who seek more experience with theoretical or computational conformal mapping techniques. The most important theoretical results are stated and proved, but the emphasis throughout remains on concrete understanding and implementation, as evidenced by the 76 figures based on quantitatively correct illustrative examples. There are over 150 classical and modern reference works cited for readers needing more details. There is also a brief appendix illustrating the use of the Schwarz-Christoffel Toolbox for MATLAB, a package for computation of these maps.

This book presents lecture notes from the XVI ‘Jacques-Louis Lions’ Spanish-French School on Numerical Simulation in Physics and Engineering, held in Pamplona (Navarra, Spain) in September 2014. The subjects covered include: numerical analysis of isogeometric methods, convolution quadrature for wave simulations, mathematical methods in image processing and computer vision, modeling and optimization techniques in food processes, bio-processes and bio-systems, and GPU computing for numerical simulation. The book is highly recommended to graduate students in Engineering or Science who want to focus on numerical simulation, either as a research topic or in the field of industrial applications. It can also benefit senior researchers and technicians working in industry who are interested in the use of state-of-the-art numerical techniques in the fields addressed here. Moreover, the book can be used as a textbook for master courses in Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering.

Numerical Treatment and Analysis of Time-Fractional Evolution Equations

Numerical Treatment and Analysis of Time-Fractional Evolution Equations

This book discusses numerical methods for solving time-fractional evolution equations. The approach is based on first discretizing in the spatial variables by the Galerkin finite element method, using piecewise linear trial functions, and then applying suitable time stepping schemes, of the type either convolution quadrature or finite difference. The main concern is on stability and error analysis of approximate solutions, efficient implementation and qualitative properties, under various regularity assumptions on the problem data, using tools from semigroup theory and Laplace transform. The book provides a comprehensive survey on the present ideas and methods of analysis, and it covers most important topics in this active area of research. It is recommended for graduate students and researchers in applied and computational mathematics, particularly numerical analysis.
