White blood cells (WBCs, Leukocytes) are nucleated cells produced from bone marrow; they have a role in body immunity. They form the first line of defense of the body against invading microorganisms. White blood cells are classified either as polymorphonuclear leucocytes (or granulocytes) or as mononuclear cells. Granulocytes are further divided into three subtypes, Neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils. Mononuclear cells indicate both lymphocytes and monocytes. The book reviews the production, morphology, distribution and kinetics, functions, non-neoplastic disorders, and inherited and acquired abnormalities of the white blood cells. An attempt is made to provide the reader with a working knowledge of the white blood cells in contemporary hematology. This book is designed to generate an overall knowledge with the WBCs for hematologists, practitioners, educators and students to accomplish an excellent overview of the topic.

A volume in the popular FactsBook Series, the First Edition of The Leucocyte Antigen FactsBook was hugely successful. The new Second Edition has been completely revised, updated, and expanded by 65% to include new findings and up-to-date key references. The introductory chapters have also been updated, especially in terms of nomenclature, the role of the World Wide Web, and new structural data. The Leucocyte Antigen FactsBook, Second Edition contains more than 200 entries, with approximately 70 new entries, on all the molecules specifically expressed in the surface of cells of the haematopoietic system, including all characterized CD antigens, antigen receptors, MHC antigens, adhesion molecules, and cytokine receptors. This FactsBook will be of enormous value to immunologists, cell biologists, biochemists, and endocrinologists.Key Features* Completely up-to-date* Revised and expanded to include over 70 new entries* More than 200 entries in total, plus additional introductory material* New structural data* New nomenclature for CD and related molecules covered

Inflammation and the Microcirculation

The microcirculation is highly responsive to, and a vital participant in, the inflammatory response. All segments of the microvasculature (arterioles, capillaries, and venules) exhibit characteristic phenotypic changes during inflammation that appear to be directed toward enhancing the delivery of inflammatory cells to the injured/infected tissue, isolating the region from healthy tissue and the systemic circulation, and setting the stage for tissue repair and regeneration. The best characterized responses of the microcirculation to inflammation include impaired vasomotor function, reduced capillary perfusion, adhesion of leukocytes and platelets, activation of the coagulation cascade, and e...

Mast Cells and Basophils

Mast Cells and Basophils will be essential reading for immunologists, biochemists and medical researchers. Detailed chapters cover all aspects of mast cell and basophil research, from cell development, proteases, histamine, cysteinyl leukotrienes, physiology and pathology to the role of these cells in health and disease. Chapters also discuss the clinical implications of histamine receptor antagonists.

The innate immune response is a crucial component of early resistance to infection, and it is now revealing increasing levels of complexity. The ability to modify the genome in vivo, has facilitated understanding of complex interactions between leucocytes and other components of the immune system, and phenotype-driven strategies using chemical mutagenesis have placed another powerful weapon in the armamentarium. In, Leucocytes: Methods and Protocols provides detailed protocols and practical advice on a variety of modern approaches to the study of leucocytes and their products. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and key tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Leucocytes: Methods and Protocols seeks to aid scientists in further study into the immune system and leucocytes.
