The story begins with my grandparents' immigration to Canada from Japan, their subsequent 42 years in British Columbia and their forced relocation in WW11 to a harsh life working in the beet fields from dawn until dusk. I was born at the end of the war in 1945 in Alberta. My mom's family were torn apart and Mom, Dad, my sister and I eventually moved to Toronto, Ontario, for a better life. The second part of the story is about my early life in TorontoTo protect us, my generation, the Sansei, third generation Canadians, our parents never shared the horrific story with us. As a result, the Sansei distanced themselves from their culture, their language and all things Japanese until the apology and redress by the Canadian government to Japanese Canadians in 1988, 43 years after the WW11 was over.

How can this be? Nathan and Naomi had a life made in heaven for forty years. Their lives together are explored in an eventful search for identity through family and historic incidents from their Aboriginal and Japanese-Canadian backgrounds. Both enjoy great success in their quests. Then tragedy strikes and dementia steals their lives. JIGSAW tells their story from both perspectives - that of the sufferer and of the caregiver. In the end, love is tested and triumphs over the despair and challenges.

BLOOM is a call to action for those individuals—not only in a later phase of life, but at any age—who feel the call to pursue a creative path in their lives. The pressures of the modern world force many into utilitarian careers early on. Artistic impulses lie unfulfilled, dormant. For some, at a certain point, there comes an ache in the bones, a deep longing for creative expression—a simultaneous sense of emptiness and overflowing feeling. This was the case for the author, Janice Mason Steeves, who left a career in psychology to pursue art in her forties. She went back to school, graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design, and went on to develop an international art career, a...

This book is about the Japanese Canadian Redress Movement in Vancouver B.C. between 1947–1988, the controversies that damaged it between 1989-1994, and some adverse consequences that remain even today in 2022. Many of these stories are untold in other Japanese Canadian redress books. Much evidentiary material has been researched and referenced to explain my views and to feature as many of the grass-roots activists as I could practically mention. Like the intrigue in a samurai movie combined with an Agatha Christie sleuth solving the great mystery and presenting a reveal at the end, I describe the plots, clues, and deductions as I gathered them. Popular slang and songs came to mind while wr...

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER When the Second World War broke out, Ralph MacLean chose to escape his troubled life on the Magdalen Islands in eastern Canada and volunteer to serve his country overseas. Meanwhile, in Vancouver, Mitsue Sakamoto saw her family and her stable community torn apart after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Like many young Canadian soldiers, Ralph was captured by the Japanese army. He would spend the war in prison camps, enduring pestilence, beatings and starvation, as well as a journey by hell ship to Japan to perform slave labour, while around him his friends and countrymen perished. Back in Canada, Mitsue and her family were expelled from their home by the government ...
