Routledge Handbook of Climate Change Impacts on Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities

This Handbook examines the diverse ways in which climate change impacts Indigenous Peoples and local communities and considers their response to these changes. While there is well-established evidence that the climate of the Earth is changing, the scarcity of instrumental data oftentimes challenges scientists’ ability to detect such impacts in remote and marginalized areas of the world or in areas with scarce data. Bridging this gap, this Handbook draws on field research among Indigenous Peoples and local communities distributed across different climatic zones and relying on different livelihood activities, to analyse their reports of and responses to climate change impacts. It includes co...

Recent findings on the role of the cell wall of pathogenetic fungi in the pathogenic processes of both vertebrates and invertebrates are presented. The fungal cell wall not only gives shape to the fungus, but it is a dynamic structure allowing fungal growth and survival of fungi in both friendly and adverse environments. It acts as a living sieve controlling the entry of nutrients and the secretion of metabolic products. In terms of fungal pathogenesis, the fungal wall may be responsible for eliciting the defense response of their respective invertebrate or vertebrate hosts or conversely it may provide protection against the host defense system during the pathogenic process.

Plant Carbohydrates II

In 1958, a single volume in the original series of this Encyclopedia adequately summarized the state of knowledge about plant carbohydrates. Expansion into two volumes in the New Series highlights the explosive increase in information and the heightened interest that attended this class of compounds in the interven ing years. Even now the search has just begun. Much remains to be accom plished; e.g., a full description of the plant cell wall in chemical terms. Why this growing fascination with plant carbohydrates? Clearly, much credit goes to those who pioneered the complex chemistry of polyhydroxylated compounds and to those who later sorted out the biochemical features of these molecules. But there is a second aspect, the role of carbohydrates in such biological func tions as host-parasite and pollen-pistil interactions, the mating reaction in fungi, symbiosis, and secretion to name a few. Here is ample reason for anyone concerned with the plant sciences to turn aside for a moment and consider how carbohydrates, so many years neglected in favor of the study of proteins and nucleic acids, contribute to the physiological processes of growth and devel opment in plants.

Fungal Cell Wall presents a comprehensive examination of the structure, synthesis, and growth of the fungal cell wall and explores the reasons for the cell wall's importance to the survival of fungi. Topics covered include the composition and structure of the fungal cell wall and how they are affected by endogenous and external factors; the structure and synthesis of glucans, chitin, and glycoproteins; and the mechanisms of secretion, organization, and final assembly of the cell wall components. The book also features excellent bibliographical coverage, which provides insight into the historical development of current ideas and the basis of current trends in research. Researchers and students in biology, microbiology, mycology, botany, and medical and plant pathology will find this book essential for reference information regarding fungi.
