Nanostructured Surfaces and Thin Films Synthesis by Physical Vapor Deposition

  • Type: Book

This Special Issue deals with the synthesis of nanostructured surfaces and thin films by means of physical vapor deposition techniques such as pulsed laser deposition, magnetron sputtering, HiPIMS, or e-beam evaporation, among others. The nanostructuration of the surface modifies the way a material interacts with the environment, changing its optical, mechanical, electrical, tribological, or chemical properties. This can be applied in the development of photovoltaic cells, tribological coatings, optofluidic sensors, or biotechnology to name a few. This issue includes research presenting novel or improved applications of nanostructured thin films, such as photovoltaic solar cells, thin-film transistors, antibacterial coatings or chemical and biological sensors, while also studying the nanostructuration mechanisms, from a fundamental point of view, that produce rods, columns, helixes or hexagonal grids at the nanoscale.

Composite Materials IV

Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS). Composite materials have been at the center of research and development, in the materials community, for decades. The concept of combining metals, ceramics and polymers of various types, shapes and properties into a single composite material having properties that none of the constituents can themselves exhibit, has provided endless scope for human beings to invent. It has therefore stimulated numerous research and development efforts, and many applications. However, in spite of the advantages of composite materials, many underlying problems arising from the complexity of the systems have greatly hindered them from being the major players that they should be in our daily lives. Needless to say, the challenges presented to the composite materials community have been the driving force for organizing composite materials conferences, including the Cross-Strait ones.

Acupuncture Therapy for Neurological Diseases

Acupuncture therapy has been practiced in China and other Asian countries for more than two thousand years. Modern clinical research has confirmed the impressive therapeutic effect of acupuncture on numerous human ailments, such as controlling pain, nausea, and vomiting. However, the biological mechanisms of acupuncture are still under debate. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the mechanism of acupuncture therapy is explained by a meridian model. According to this model, acupuncture is believed to treat the diseased organs by modulating two conditions known as Yin and Yang, which represent all the opposite principles that people find in the universe, both inside and outside the human bo...

Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis of Materials

"Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis of Materials" is a collection of papers that reflect modern trends in self-propagating, high-temperature synthesis (SHS), a process for syntheses of modern materials carried out in the mode of autowave solid-flame combustion. To date, SHS-produced materials have found their application in different branches of modern science and technology, mechanical engineering, ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy, aerospace engineering, chemical industry, electrical engineering and electronics. This book will be valuable to researchers in the SHS community as well as in the fields of combustion, materials science and technology, pure and applied chemistry and metallurgy.
