An Ethnic Profile: U.S. Air Force Blue to San Francisco P.D. Blue

I would like to reach young police officers who have no idea what it took to open doors of opportunity, pre 1970. It was presumed that we were less competent, and when we offered new ideas we were treated like vermin. Many of us had college training, believed what we were taught, but not allowed to influence change. One example is: “We would prefer 100 guilty to go free than to convict one innocent person,” while truth was that arrests equaled promotions, and it did not matter that the suspect was innocent. When we asked to have record of those we knew were innocent expunged, we were told that we were on the side of criminals: “In most cases the suspect was ethnic minority!” We are paying for many who spent decades proclaiming their innocence, now DNA proves they were telling the truth.

Digital Media and Democratic Futures

The revolution in digital communications has altered the relationship between citizens and political elites, with important implications for democracy. As new information ecosystems have evolved, as unforeseen examples of their positive and negative consequences have emerged, and as theorizing, data, and research methods have expanded and improved, the central question has shifted from if the digital information environment is good or bad for democratic politics to how and in what contexts particular attributes of this environment are having an influence. It is only through the careful analysis of specific cases that we can begin to build a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the...

Move or Die

“... (the) lessons, words, vision, and inspirational stories not only impacted me in the NFL, but as a man. I am grateful for his significance in my life... we either ‘move’ or we ‘die.’”—Russell Wilson, NFL Quarterback Chris Carlisle, former Super Bowl Champion Performance Coach, has written a book that blazes a clear path from where you presently are to where you expect to be. There are two kinds of people in the world: those who are stuck and those who are moving towards accomplishing their grandest dreams. Which one are you? On one hand, there are people who became stuck behind life’s barriers and eventually stagnated because they had no idea how to move on. Without a pla...

Reimagining Money

Technology is rapidly changing the way we think about money. Digital payment has been slow to take off in the United States but is displacing cash in countries as diverse as China, Kenya, and Sweden. In Reimagining Money, Sibel Kusimba describes the rise of M-Pesa, and offers a rich portrait of how this technology changes the economic and social landscape, allowing users to create webs of relationships as they exchange, pool, borrow, lend, and share digital money in user-built networks. These networks, Kusimba argues, will shape the future of financial technologies and their impact on poverty, inclusion, and empowerment. She describes how urban and transnational migrants maintain a presence ...
