In recent years, discussions about reparations for Black Americans have gone from the abstract to the possible. While critics claim that reparations are unnecessary because those who deserve compensation are long dead, others argue that in the years since the end of the Civil War the United States enacted many harmful laws and policies that prevented its Black citizens from leading enriched lives. The viewpoints in this volume examine whether reparations are the best way to right a wrong, how other countries have handled similar matters, and how reparations could be executed on a practical level.
This volume contains the papers presented at the 13th International Workshop on Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing. It also contains extended abstracts of submissions that were accepted as posters. The workshop was held at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. Although the two main characters in A Dream of Annapurna are Italian and the novel is set partly in Tuscany, in many ways this is an international novel, with people from France, Italy, America, Russia, Switzerland, Spain, China, and Nepal playing small but important parts in the story. The settings, too, range from Italy to New York, Paris to Kathmandu, and the lower slopes of Annapurna. The novel is both historical and contemporary, spanning a period of sixty years, from 1955 to 2015, and combining both real-life and fictional characters. The major themes of the novel are universally human and include youth, ambition, age, friendship, fear, bravery, and love. Overshadowing these human characteristics is an implacable natural world. The mighty mountain Annapurna, long the focus of the protagonists’ dreams, comes to loom physically over them, but even the permanence of the natural world is threatened by the horrific earthquake which hit Kathmandu on 25 April 2015.

In this book, sociologist Lynn Hortonexplores how the most dynamic sectors of the global economy—finance and technology—are shaping new forms of elite masculinity. She offers fresh insights into the often overlooked links between economic inequalities and the identity politics of gender and race. Through analysis of the lives and discourse of utra-visible male billionaires, Horton examines how extreme accumulations of wealth are both imbued with gendered celebrity and moral authority and harshly contested. She identifies the ways neoliberalism as an ideological project, advanced by elite-funded networks of think tanks and advocacy groups, draws on such masculinities to amplify and naturalize market-centered assumptions, values, and practices. Gender systems—relational and ranked constructs of masculinity/femininity—permeate neoliberal discourse of markets, the state, and the household. Horton also details the tensions and ties between technocratic elite masculinities which eschew open sexism and discrimination and rightwing populist mobilization of gendered and racialized anti-elite discourse.
