Training Readers and Writers for a Multimodal and Multimedia Society: Cognitive Aspects

Contemporary societies have been advancing gradually towards the construction of a model of a literate population. Significant efforts have been made so that most citizens can access various sources today, using their reading and writing abilities, but are we really prepared to face the information age? Is information literacy being promoted from schools? Are individual capabilities being considered? Do we have a true critical literacy? This article collection aims to show an overview of the most recent research; ranging from the individual to the collective, from the subject's competencies and their beliefs, to the way to develop them from school. There is room in this Research Topic for in...

Pioneering Family Firms’ Sustainable Development Strategies

This book describes the sustainable development journey of 15 business families committed to using their enterprises as a force of societal good. In turn, each family reaps benefits of high economic returns, while contributing to society and environment. The youngest family firm is in its 20s, while there are others over 100 years of age. Size, industry, locations vary. But all these business families share a deep shared commitment towards sustainable development, control over strategic decision-making in their firms and trans-generational continuity intentions. Family values embed their enterprises with a strong sense of purpose to achieve their chosen sustainable development goals. Professionalized systems and processes foster the development of capabilities, and partnerships with a variety of stakeholders ensure the simultaneous achievement of social, environmental and profitability goals.

COVID-19 is a highly contagious viral illness caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome SARSCoV-2. It has had a devastating effect on the world’s demographics with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. After the influenza pandemic of 1918, it has emerged as the most consequential global health crisis. After the first cases of this predominantly respiratory viral illness were first reported in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, in late December 2019, SARS-CoV- 2 rapidly disseminated across the world in a short span of time, compelling the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare it a global pandemic on March 11, 2020. The outbreak of COVID-19 has proven to be a worldwide unprecedented disa...

Factoring Ethics in Technology, Policy Making, Regulation and AI

This book explores the ethical implications of the burgeoning adoption and deployment of Autonomous Decision Making and Algorithmic Learning Systems (ADM/ALS) on human rights and societal values as well as these systems’ potential social harms and benefits. After two millennia of recorded civilization, consideration of ethics and social values in all that we strive for is a long-overdue phenomenon. Therefore this is a journey that we’ve just embarked on thanks to the emergence of ADM/ALS and should not be treated as a destination in line with many other facets and emergent properties of products, services, and systems. This book informs policymakers and practitioners about best practices in technology ethics pertinent to many disciplines and sectors.

Flavor physics is fundamental to test the Standard Model of particle physics and could be the key to discover new physics. This book explores lepton flavor violating implications in the low scale seesaw models, a well-motivated scenario for explaining the still open problem of neutrino mass generation. It studies the lepton flavor violating Higgs decays in depth, developing useful simple expressions for making fast estimations of this observable. It also introduces a new parametrization optimized for the study of lepton flavor violation in these models, showing that high rates could be obtained for Higgs and Z decays if these new heavy neutrinos have masses in the TeV range. Lastly, it goes on to explore the possibility of their production and decay at the Large Hadron Collider through events with two charged leptons of different flavor.

This book is a compendium of knowledge about nanomaterials and strategies for bioremediation over hazardous environmental pollutants. The book is divided into 2 sections. Section 1 deals with the polluted environment, where it explains that soil is in serious danger and highlights the primary hazardous pollutants. Besides, this section covers algae, autochthonous, introduced, or genetically modified organisms that are used to degrade hazardous contaminants. In Section 2, Bio- and Nanoremediation are shown through synthesis, green synthesis and molecular farming, and their applications or impacts. Moreover, this discusses bio- and nano-remediation, working together for better performance, organisms, and nanomaterials for environmental remediation.

Pathobiology of Parasitic Protozoa: Dynamics and Dimensions

This book illustrates the importance and significance of the systems approach in deciphering diverse aspects of host-parasite interactions in infection dynamics. It describes the complex issues and state-of-the-art progress in the infection biology of parasitic protozoa. The book explores the current concepts and paradigms of gene expression, metabolome, and immune remodeling in these diseases. The chapters encompass updates on the parasitic tropism, co-evolution, systemic responses in hosts, and translational approaches. It provides an overview of the parasite's efficient ways of exploiting host molecules and describes pathways for their survival, differentiation, and replication within the host cells. The book also delineates the role of inflammasomes and their activation in response to the protozoan parasite. The book discusses technological progress and machine learning-based modeling approaches to revisit parasitic infection from a non-conventional perspective. Collectively this book offers a comprehensive purview of concepts and paradigms in parasitic infection in the form of an updated yet discernible elucidation.

Working Collaboratively in Second/Foreign Language Learning

Since the introduction of communicative language teaching, collaborative learning has played an important role in the second language (L2) classroom. Drawing from sociocultural theory, which states that human cognitive development is a socially situated activity mediated by language, studies in L2 pedagogy advocate the use of tasks that require learners to work together. Collaborative dialogue encourages language learning, and research shows that the solutions reached by students in this process are more often correct with a lasting influence on their language comprehension. This volume includes ten chapters that illustrate the benefits of collaborative dialogue in second foreign language classrooms. The volume considers key issues dealing with collaborative tasks and implications for language teaching.
