Thr oughout the tropics there is a huge diversity in house design and use of building supplies based on centuries of indigenous ex- perience, customs, and availability of local resources for construc- tion. These differences in building style and materials affect the in- door conditions and comfor t of occupants, which in turn influence the occupants' exposure to certain infectious diseases. In this book the authors describe the architectural designs and materials of rural houses in two countries in Asia (Thailand, Philippines) and two in Africa (The Gambia, T anzania). They analyse the effect of design on the indoor climate and r elate these factors to health, notably the risk of mosquito-bor ne infectious diseases such as malaria. Based on their findings and a detailed understanding of local building styles, they describe a series of house modifications that could enhance comfor t whilst r educing health risks.

Integrated vector management (IVM) is a rational decision-making process for optimal use of resources for vector control. The aim of the IVM approach is to contribute to achievement of the global targets set for vector-borne disease control, by making vector control more efficient, cost-effective, ecologically sound and sustainable. Use of IVM helps vector control programs to find and use more local evidence, to integrate interventions where appropriate and to collaborate within the health sector and with other sectors, as well as with households and communities. By reorientating to IVM, vector control programs will be better able to meet the growing challenges in the control of malaria, den...

Tony McMichael, a renowned epidemiologist and a pioneer in the field of how human health relates to climate change, is the ideal guide to this phenomenon, and in his magisterial Climate Change and the Health of Nations, he presents a sweeping and authoritative analysis of how human societies have been shaped by climate events.
