In May 2000, scholars of history, law, politics, and economics gathered in London to compare their various methodological and empirical perspectives on the 1989-90 collapse of the Germanies into a unity, and the aftermath of the event from the perspective of a decade on. Their 14 studies cover histo

On Their Own Terms is a study of how post-1990 German literature reconfigures the legacy of National Socialism and the Holocaust. In five sections - Historisation, Perpetrators, Hitler-Youth Memories, War Memories and Victim Perspective - a number of key literary works such as Bernhard Schlink's Der Vorleser, Martin Walser's Ein springender Brunnen, Gunter Grass's Im Krebsgang and W. G. Sebald's Austerlitz are analysed. The literary texts are situated within the wider context of contemporary German debates on the issue, from the exhibition 'Crimes of the German Wehrmacht 1941-1945', to the Walser-Bubis-affair and the ensuing debate about representations of German suffering. One of the central concerns of this book is the literary configuration of German experience and the narrative strategies employed by the writers to validate it against or set it in context with a perspective of victim experience.

The Future of the German Economy

Flagships of Imperialism is the first scholarly monograph on the history of the P&O shipping company, and the first history of P&O to pay due attention to the context of nineteenth century imperial politics which so significantly shaped the company's development. Based chiefly on unpublished material from the P&O archives and the National Archives, and on contemporary official publications, the book covers the crucial period from the company's origins to 1867. After presenting new findings about the company's origins in the Irish transport industry, the book charts the extension of the founders' interests from the Iberian peninsula to the Mediterranean, India, China and Australia. In so doin...

Following the locust years of the neo-liberal revolution, social democracy was the great victor at the fin-de-sicle elections. Today, parties descended from the Second International hold office throughout the European Union, while the Right appears widely disorientated by the dramatic "modernisation" of a political tradition dating back to the nineteenth century. The focal point of Gerassimos Moschonas's study is the emergent "new social democracy" of the twenty-first century. As Moschonas demonstrates, change has been a constant of social-democratic history: the core dominant reformist tendency of working-class politic notwithstanding, capitalism has transformed social democracy more than it has succeeded in transforming capitalism. Now, in the "great transformation" of recent years, a process of "de-social-democratization" has been set in train, affecting every aspect of the social-democratic phenomenon, from ideology and programs to organization and electorates. Analytically incisive and empirically meticulous, In the Name of Social Democracy will establish itself as the standard reference work on the logic and dynamics of a major mutation in European politics.

The book examines the historical significance and contemporary relevance of a body of thought about rejuvenating liberalism that has tended to be neglected in the English-speaking world in favour of the rise of social liberalism.
