The photograph from the air of the University of Montreal, built (1928-1945) on Mount-Royal by Quebec-born Architect/Engineer Ernest Cormier, (1885- 1980), trained in Paris. That whole period was very important for developing the Province of Quebec. The building was built on the north-side of the Mountain with the enormous old cemetery easily visible and the St. Lawrence river just visible on the other side. Today, such a photograph would no longer be so striking, the whole area has many more impressive buildings and enormous trees cover the area. We lived a ten minute walk away from the bottom left-hand corner of the picture in Outremont, the francophone counterpart of Anglophone Westmount two miles of so to the west. The head office of Family Medicine was situated close to and just to the west of the big tower. It is from there that the Bethune/Chinese connection was established. I was at the UofM from 1975-1995. It was by far the most productive period of our professional lives.
The book is based on the life of Jim Mahon, who was an outstanding hockey prospect, killed in a farm accident at age 19. His death broke the heart of a whole community. Jim was generally considered to be a young phenom, like a Gretzky or an Orr. His story is compelling even now, forty years after his death not only because of his hockey ability, but more because he was such a great human being.
About 21 years ago prenatal diagnosis became part of the physician's diagnostic armamentarium against genetic defects. My first monograph in 1973 (The Prenatal Diagnosis of Hereditary Disorders) critically assessed early progress and enunciated basic principles in the systematic approach to prenatal genetic diagnosis. Six years later and under the current title, a subsequent volume provided the first major reference source on this subject. The present second (effectively third) edition, which was urged in view of the excellent reception of the two earlier volumes, reflects the remarkable growth of this new discipline and points to significant and exciting future developments. Notwithstanding these advances, the use of the new tools and techniques for the benefit of at-risk parents has taken many more years than most anticipated. Key factors have been the lack of teaching of human genetics in medical schools in the preceding decades and the difficulty of educating practicing physicians in a new scientific disci pline. Even today the teaching of genetics in medical schools leaves much to be desired and this will further delay the introduction of newer genetic advances to the bedside.
