Defines and depicts the arts and architecture of the rococo period in France and examines its relation to society
During the final decades of the ancient regime, prominent collectors in Paris commissioned and collected French paintings of the period, works by Greuze, Fragonard, David and others that together comprised 'l'Ecole Francoise' - the French School. In this book, an art historian discusses six of these collectors and the collections they assembled, showing that private patronage in this period was revitalized by this patriotic desire to collect contemporary art. Colin B. Bailey explains why a taste for modern art emerged at this time and how it was encouraged and fostered. Examining the relationship between artist and patron, he discusses the degree of influence these enlightened patrons and collectors expected to exercise when new works were being commissioned. Bailey shows that collectors of eighteenth-century French painting seem not to have made rigid distinctions between the various genres or styles of the Academy's practitioners. Instead, history paintings and genre paintings - both rococo and neo-classical - were exhibited proudly on their walls as superb examples of the French School.
Andre Robidou was born in 1643 in Burgoes, Spain. His parents were Manuel Robidou of France and Catherine Alve. He married Jeanne Denote in Quebec City, Quebec May 16, 1667. Her parents were Antoine Denote and Catherine Leduc. Andre and Jeanne had five children. They lived in La Prairie, Quebec. Andre died April 1, 1678. Jeanne married Jacques Surprenant August 16, 1678 and had seven more children. Robidou descendants and relatives lived in Quebec, New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Vermont, Massachusetts and elsewhere.
Much of the period 1661-1815 appeared to be the age of France. France was the greatest power in Western Europe in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and Louis XIV and Napoleon seemed to dominate their periods. yet when Louis XIV died in 1715, and again after Napoleon's attempt to resume power was defeated at Waterloo a century later, France appeared as a waning power. This failure in Europe was matched on the world scale. France was overtaken by Britain in the struggle for maritime predominance, and ended the period with her empire in ruins. From Louis XIV to Napoleon is a scholarly yet accessible account which considers why France was not more successful and throws light on French history, international relations, warfare and the rise and fall of French power.
