The ability to discover and respond to societal needs in the field of culture requires an integrated, interdisciplinary, and cross-sectoral approach. Such a holistic view is offered by the design thinking method, which has been extracted from the field of design and could be applied also in the sphere of culture. Interdisciplinarity and consideration of users' needs are characteristics of contemporary design and can be a significant support when faced with the challenges of cultural heritage management. The abovementioned factors act as the premise behind undertaking an analysis of the possibility of adapting the design thinking method to the management of intangible cultural heritage, and t...
Clusters are considered crucial nodes in the ongoing transformation of international value chains (IVCs). Due to technological advancements and external shocks, such as pandemic and political conflicts, value chains (VCs) have been spatially and functionally shortening, and clusters are well suited to address the resulting demand for more diversified and higher value-adding activities in geographical proximity, such as European economic area. However, clusters differ in their positions and capability to advance in IVCs, which induces the research problem of the conditions for cluster upgrading (CU). Since 2014, the Human Cities network has been working on Challenging the City Scale: a pan-European project led by Cité du design Saint-Étienne and supported by the Creative Europe programme to question the urban scale and investigate co-creation in cities. The Human Cities partners have carried out urban experimentations in 11 European cities empowering citizens to rethink the spaces in which they live, work and spend their leisure time. Through conversations with people involved, the book examines how bottom-up processes and their design, tools and instruments generate new ideas to reinvent the city. It offers inspiration and insights to everyone, from practitioners and politicians to designers and active citizens, eager to try out new ways to produce more human cities together.
