Cimabue
Definitive and richly illustrated, this volume is the first extensive examination of Cimabue's work to appear in English in more than thirty years. Cimabue (c. 1240-1302) was the most admired artist of his time in Tuscany and Central Italy. His paintings and mosaics are seen by some as the last great flowering of Medieval art, and by others as the first works of the Renaissance. The earthquakes that shook Central Italy in late 1997 struck hardest at the legacy of Cimabue, crumbling his brilliantly-colored paintings in the vault of the Upper Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi. The tragic Florentine flood of 1966 had already destroyed much of the master's famous Santa Croce Crucifix. But in this book a combination of archival and newly commissioned photographs - including pictures of the Assisi vault shot just moments before its collapse - offer a complete panorama of the artist's works, before flood or earthquake damage, and before and after recent restorations.

The Limbourg Brothers
Although the Nijmegen artists Herman, Paul and Jean de Limbourg were barely thirty years old when they suddenly died in 1416, they already had a formidable career behind them. Now, almost six hundred years after their creation, the colourful and highly refined miniatures in the "Belles Heures" and "Tr s Riches Heures du Duc de Berry" still speak vividly to our imagination. In 2005 Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen presented the exhibition The Limbourg Brothers. Nijmegen Masters at the French Court (1400-1416) . This was the first time that original miniatures from four manuscripts by the Limbourg brothers were shown in the Netherlands. The exhibition formed an excellent opportunity to invite prominent scholars to share their views on the art of the Limbourg brothers during a two-day conference. This publication presents in written form the conference papers delivered by some of the leading scholars in the field. In that respect, the volume acts as an addendum to the catalogue. Duccio
A study of Duccio's Maesta (Virgin in Majesty). The Maesta was painted between 1308 and 1311 by Duccio di Buoninsegna for the high altar of Siena Cathedral. The volume contains photographs of the different sections of the great altarpiece, both the front, showing the Virgin in glory, and the back, with the stories of the Passion of Christ taken from the gospels. The narrative sequence of the Maesta moves from the enthroned Virgin and Christ to the figures of the angels, saints and apostles who surround her. The scenes of the Passion, from left to right, follow the chronological order of the Gospels.
