Erziehungswissenschaftler und Didaktiker haben in den letzten Jahrzehnten die Perspektive von Lernenden in schulischen Bildungsprozessen stärker in den Blick genommen. Das Einlassen auf konkrete Bildungsprozesse und die Wahrnehmung der Ungewissheit in der Planung und Gestaltung von Unterricht waren Ausgangspunkte für die Herausbildung der Bildungsgangdidaktik. Dabei war die Idee leitend, schulisches Lernen als Bearbeitung von Entwicklungsaufgaben zu verstehen. Lernende gestalten ihre Bildungsgänge, indem sie Anforderungen ihrer sozialen Umwelt als Aufgaben eigener Entwicklung bearbeiten und dabei schulische Lernangebote als mehr oder weniger hilfreich wahrnehmen.
